  • Quiet site 10 minutes' drive from Villa de Leyva
  • Iguaque cloud forest, museums and ruins within half an hour's drive
  • On-site shop and restaurant; bar with evening entertainments
Fancy flying like a bird? The friendly folks at Pietra Santa Camping Bungalow are keen to make it happen for you: they can fix up paragliding trips over the lakes, ruins, cloud forests and peaks of the Boyacá highlands. This cracker of a Colombian site is a 10-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the main square of Villa de Leyva, a mountain-fringed town full of colonial buildings, museums, restaurants and handicraft shops. It’s also one of the largest main squares in Latin America, and after a day of busily crisscrossing it between galleries and eateries, shops and bars, all at 7,000-odd feet above sea level, you’ll be grateful of a welcoming and laidback base to return to. Once restored by sundowners at Pietra Santa’s bar, you can hit the town again or take it easy, dining at the restaurant and savouring the evening entertainments on site. For those who prefer self catering, there are firepits and barbecue areas dotted around the grounds and if you fancy grilling a slightly less familiar fare, the ostrich farm, five minutes’ drive out of town, sells burgers, sausages and cutlets from its flightless dinosaur bird flock. If that's not your scene, safer things in packets and tins are on sale at the site shop.

Local attractions

For genuine dinosaur hunters, Villa de Leyva’s natural history museum and fossil museum are full to the gunnels with local finds, and you can have close-up encounters with scale models of the scaly monsters among the primordial landscapes of Gondava theme park, 15 minutes’ away. History of a more recent kind is hard to avoid in Villa de Leyva: the museum houses of Antonio Ricaurte and Antonio Nariño tell the brave and bloody tale of Colombia’s struggle for independence, while the Museo del Carmen is crammed with religious art. Out of town, the stone circles and ruined temple buildings of Moniquirá and Gachantivá (20 minutes and half an hour’s drive away) attest to the rich and ancient traditions of the local Muisca people. For hikes among the heights, you can’t top the trails around the waterfalls of La Periquera and El Haya, half an hour and 45 minutes away. If you’re after something less noisy (and more of a challenging climb), head into the cloud forests of Iguaque and climb up to the lake of the same name. Trails start half an hour’s drive from town to this high altitude zone, considered sacred to the Muiscas and so serenely quiet that many tired visitors lie down for a snooze.
