  • Peaceful site on the shores of scenic Lago de Tota
  • A 20-minute drive from Tota and 40 minutes from Aquitania
  • Guided horseback tours; on-site restaurant at weekends
In need of peaceful hols? Head along to Camping El Mirador del Lago de Tota, a back to basics site 15 minutes’ drive from the small Andean town of Cuítiva and 20 minutes from Tota in the Boyacá department of central Colombia. On the shores of Lago de Tota (Colombia’s largest lake), it should come as no surprise that there’s plenty of watery adventure to be had round here – immediate tracks should be made for Playa Blanca, a white sandy beach 25 minutes from base, where there’s jetskiing, ATV hire and chilly dips in the lake. If cold toes don’t appeal, there are altogether warmer options half an hour away in Iza, where there are natural hot springs to get things nice and toasty. Otherwise, take the plunge in the lake then scurry back to site where there are plenty of firepits just waiting to be filled with wood (which is for sale on site) and set alight. When hunger strikes, there’s a supermarket five minutes away and lots of barbecue spots dotted around the site for outdoor eats. Alternatively, time stays well and bag a table at the site restaurant, which is open every Saturday and Sunday and during public holidays.

Route directions

Travelling from Bogotá by public transport is easy, and is the best decision for convenience and economy. From the Bogotá transport terminal, take a direct bus to Sogamoso, two and a half hours away. When you get to Sogamoso, find a company called CootransCondor, which operates a 40-minute route from the city to Cuitiva, and has hourly departures. Ask the driver to drop you at the entrance to El Mirador del Lago de Tota.

Local attractions

Boyacá is one of the more scenic parts of Colombia, full of stunning mountain views, pristine lakes and pretty little towns that visitors to the region should make haste to. It’s impossible to see them all though, so settle for a selection, starting with the Natural Reserve ‘Old Pueblito’ open-air museum, five minutes’ drive from base, for strolls across cobbled squares, visits to the old train station, and wanders through the flea market. Fancy this, but on a grander scale? Pile into the car for a jaunt to Pueblito Boyacense, a little under an hour and a half away, where a Colombian businessman has brought Boyacá’s most famous towns to one place – there are more than 100 houses here, allowing guests to stroll right from Villa de Leyva to Tibasosa, viewing colourful boyacense buildings from all round the region on the way. Some, of course, are worth visiting in person… Mongui, considered by many to be the most beautiful village in Boyacá, is an hour and a half from the site, and (closer at hand) the town of Aquitania is a 40-minute drive around the lake when a change of scenery – and lots of restaurant options – is called for.
