- Lively family site five minutes’ drive from Krapec on the Black Sea
- Durankulak Roman ruins 20 minutes’ drive; Shabla Lighthouse 25 minutes
- Bar, restaurant and live music; watersports and kids’ activities
‘Sun and fun’ is the mantra at Krapec Beach on Bulgaria’s northern Black Sea coast – a promise this family-friendly seaside site delivers in spades. It’s five minutes’ drive north of the village of Krapec on an tarmac road, and is a magical, untamed spot with pitches tucked under the cooling shade of trees. So let the fun begin…
It’s a doddle to keep the kids occupied with lots of sporting activities or painting at the little crafts hub – where you can also borrow books for quieter moments. The laidback beach bar is the centre of all the entertainment action, with parties and live bands on the adjoining stage.
Meals made from seasonal and organic ingredients are served in the restaurant, where you can also try homemade fruit brandy – or alternatively you can go down the self-catering route and grill up your own supper at the communal barbecue (pick up supplies at the on-site market).
And if that’s not quite enough, a long beach stretches from the site around the sea shore, with facilities for kitesurfing, dinghy sailing and swimming – or, of course, simply soaking up the sun on the sand.

Local attractions
You have an expanse of sandy beach more-or-less to yourself right in front of the pitches; there are surfing and kitesurfing schools at the north end of the beach (10 minutes’ drive) if you feel like having a go at watersports. There’s also a quiet, unserviced beach at Ezerets (15 minutes), and another at Shabla (20 minutes) that’s backed by a smattering of seafood restaurants.
From there, you can take a gentle walk to the landmark red-and-white striped Shabla Lighthouse (25 minutes), and continue up the peninsula to Bulgaria’s easternmost point (five minutes’ walk between the two). Another headland walk can be followed along soaring cliffs to Cape Kaliakra (50 minutes’ drive), where your reward is fine views over the Black Sea.
Any history fans among you can have a potter around Durankulak Archaeological Park (20 minutes), with its scattered remains of Neolithic and ancient Roman settlements. There are ancient cave dwellings at Yaylata National Archaeological Reserve (40 minutes), and you can tour lush gardens and relics of a subterranean church at Aladzha Monastery (around an hour’s drive).
