The Campine region of north-eastern Belgium is a top destination for cyclists – or, indeed, for anyone keen to explore its wetlands and forests. Making the most of all that requires some accommodation, and slap bang in the middle of this area is Camping GT Keiheuvel. With spacious pitches, this site is popular with families thanks to the presence of a play area and an outdoor swimming pool with a slide (open during high season only). While the kids entertain themselves and make new friends, the grownups can relax poolside or, if they’re feeling particularly active, hit the on-site sports hall, with a gym and tennis courts. A 10-minute walk past Aeroclub Keiheuvel (where you can watch gliders take to the air), leads to a recreation park with an adventure playground, miniature golf and go-karts. Meanwhile, cyclists shouldn’t miss the Fietsen door de Bomen (15 minutes’ drive or half an hour by bike), a cycle path with stretches going through the tree canopy. This site scores highly in terms of leisure facilities, but what about amenities? Well, it’s top marks again, with showers and a toilet block (including facilities for the disabled), plus a washing-up area, launderette and recycling points. There’s also a café for when you start to feel hungry, or you can stock up on provisions (the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away) and have a barbecue. There are also plenty of dining options in the town of Balen (five minutes).

Spacious Aussie-friendly campsite, heaps of room on pitches, many with water/power. Friendly staff, clean amenities (some a bit old). Great value! Pool & playgrounds big hits with families. Mostly quiet, but a few mentioned nearby events. More hand wash facilities & better Wi-Fi would be spot on.

Disliked Staff was rude can't take drinks to the pool when the pool opens at 10 and the bar at 3 lake is not swimmable nearest shop is hours walk cold showers. only take cash not stated online no cashpoint about kids screaming till late also have to pay 20 euroe for toilet key also not stated online this they will take card for swimming pool freezing cold

Liked Nice well kept site with a great pool area. The main play park is next to camping area which is ideal on an evening to let my 8 year old play out late.

Excellent sports facilities it’s like a sports centre.

Finally a fantastic municipal park within 5 mins walk that you can spend all day at has loads of play areas pool trampolines and serves food. Highly recommend.

Disliked Chemical toilet emptying area is poor could be improved as not very sanitary.

Meadow fully-serviced grass tent site

Liked L espace tente est très bien. Les arbres offrent de l ombre quand il y a du soleil. Les sanitaires sont propres et proches. La piscine edt sympa et la cafétéria est bien située en face de la piscine. Vous pouvez facilement manger des frites boire un verre et retourner à la piscine.

Meadow fully-serviced grass tent site

Liked Friendly at reception. Campsite was clean with good electricity and water supply. Bathroom facilities were good. The pitch site was pretty and as a camp site is is extremely good value for money. The sport centre is extensive (extra fee for using it). Please see negatives also listed, we enjoyed the holiday but these are things to be aware of.
Amazing cycling routes and everyone is really friendly

Disliked - You had to book to use the laundry facilities 2 days in advance and it cost 15 euros
- Cannot adjust the shower temperature but water was warm
- Only 4 sun loungers at pool
- No shop to buy any food and restaurant only opened at 4pm
- There is noise from the paddle courts late into the night and you can hear military planes overhead

Lions and tigers and bears – oh my. These are just some of the residents at Pakawi Park (15 minutes’ drive), a forested zoo where you can also see cheetahs, capuchin monkeys and pink flamingoes. And when the kids get tired of the animals (as if…), they can take a break on the giant bouncy castle. Sahara Lommel (half an hour) is a nature reserve named after the large expanse of sand at its core. Unlike its African namesake, though, this area is surrounded by green forests and dotted with lakes. You can spot birds like grebes and ducks here, or climb the 30-m Uitkijktoren Lommelse Sahara tower for far-reaching views. Amusement rides await at Bobbejaanland (35 minutes), with something for every age group – from gentle boat trips along a lazy river to thrilling rollercoasters and water attractions – all spread between four themed areas, including a Cowboy Town.
