  • Modern and well-kept country campsite 20 minutes’ drive from Zwettl
  • Freibad Gross Gerungs five minutes’ drive; Zwettl Abbey 25 minutes
  • Restaurant, garden terrace and grocery shop; walks from the pitches
They’re obviously doing something very right at Waldviertel Camping, as there’s been some sort of hospitality going on there for more than 150 years. Sitting in the hilly countryside of Lower Austria, this peaceful and family-run spot is 20 minutes’ drive from the gorgeous and historic town of Zwettl. The campsite is located in the middle of a tree-lined meadow, far removed from traffic noise and anything that is stressful in everyday cares – and a few steps away is a meditation spot among granite boulders, there for those times when you need a little more help to escape from reality. All the grass pitches and tent sites have water and electricity, and are close to the ultra-modern – and highly decorative – shower block, which also has a baby-changing room, a washing machine and tumble dryer. You can go down the self-catering route and get grilling on your barbecue, or head straight for the handsome Gasthof Einfalt for simple home cooking and menus utilising home-grown organic potatoes, trout or carp from local waters and meat from the region’s organic farmers. On warm summer evenings, the guest terrace opens up for themed dining and barbecue nights. There’s a small on-site grocery shop too, selling homemade chutneys and jams.

Local attractions

Zwettl (20 minutes’ drive) may well be the first stop on your sightseeing itinerary. Explore the baroque-era old town with its ornate church towers and fountain-filled piazzas, and take a tour (complete with tastings) of the Zwettler Dämmerschoppen brewery. Make time for a guided walk around the beautiful gardens and Cistercian monastery at Zwettl Abbey (25 minutes), a striking mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and baroque architecture. If you’d rather stick to exploring the region on foot, there are countless way-marked hiking routes in the Waldviertel countryside. If it’s pedal power for you, try out mountain-bike trails through forest and meadows in the Gross Gerungs hills just five minutes by cycle from the campsite. Still out in the clean country air, try the swimming pool at Freibad Gross Gerungs (five minutes) for a restorative dip in water cleaned without the use of chemicals, go boating at Freizeitanlage Frauenwieserteich (15 minutes) or try your hand on the golf course (25 minutes).
