Peaceful grass pitches

  • Pitches on a sheep pasture 10 minutes’ drive from Sirnitz in Carinthia
  • Minimundus and Adler Arena Burg Landskron both 40 minutes’ drive
  • Nearly wild camping near forest hikes, cycle rides and swimming lakes
When you want to escape the 21st century to a place where time has apparently stood still, book in at Bauernhof Camping, a farm site 10 minutes’ drive from the alpine village of Sirnitz in Austria’s mountainous Carinthia region. What awaits you there is the chance to camp on the sheep pasture, where your only companions are likely to be a few other camping guests (pitch numbers are strictly limited) and livestock grazing contentedly around you. Accessed by a wide gate, the level meadow is edged and partially shaded by mature trees; you’re free to set up wherever you want, so choose your spot and settle in for a restful break from the hurly burly of life. The site is set on the edge of forest, and you have easy access to woodland hiking, cycle rides and wild swimming lakes straight from your pitch. Facilities are sparse, as befits the ‘nearly’ wild camping vibe. There’s a composting loo, but you’ll need to fend for yourselves for everything else – which means bringing in your own torches, supply of batteries and drinking water. There are no showers, and dogs are not allowed on site due to the constant presence of livestock around you.

Local attractions

You may be content to enjoy the sight of sheep grazing in the pasture, but if you’re keen to explore the surrounding countryside, you can walk directly from your pitch to the Gurk riverside, into the forest or to the small lake at Naturbadeteich Sirnitz (40 minutes’ stroll) for wild swimming. There are cycle rides that follow quiet winding roads around the site, and if you’re feeling any aches or pains from all that activity, book a shiatsu massage with the site owner. When you’re holidaying with younger kids, you’ll find plenty to do too. Minimundus is a theme park showcasing all the major attractions of Europe (think the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa) in miniature. Most youngsters will also appreciate watching flying displays at Adler Arena Burg Landskron, with the backdrop of a medieval castle, or getting up close to macaques at Affenberg Landskron (all 40 minutes’ drive). Got older offspring with you? Test their mettle on the hair-raising slide down the outside of landmark Pyramidenkogel Tower (55 minutes), or head for its upper floors to admire spectacular views over Lake Wörthersee. Sneak a bit of culture onto your holiday agenda with a visit to the sculpture park at Albeck Castle (five minutes), where you can also watch alfresco concerts over the summer months.
