  • Communal barbecues, play area and tour desk; shops 10 minutes’ walk
Literally a minute’s walk from the ocean, Sandy Bay Holiday Park is a quiet, shady and landscaped holiday park in Busselton, Western Australia. It’s on the foreshore overlooking the calm waters of Geographe Bay and yet an easy 15 minutes’ drive east to Busselton’s lively centre and its famous Jetty and Underwater Observatory. Family-friendly accommodation is in self-contained chalets, each featuring a fireplace, fully equipped kitchen with washing machine, a spacious dining area and ensuite bathroom with a shower and hairdryer. Outside, there’s a patio for alfresco dining, or you can share an outdoor supper in the communal barbecue area, surrounded by landscaped gardens. Pick up grill essentials from the stores in Broadwater (10 minutes’ walk) or go to Busselton for serious grocery restocking. Kids can run off energy in the park playground, and staff members at the tour desk are there to offer advice and book trips for guests. An array of activities can be enjoyed on site or locally, including cycling, swimming, sea fishing and snorkelling. Sandy Bay Holiday Park is also gateway to the Margaret River wine region (half an hour’s drive) with its internationally renowned wineries, whale-spotting cruises and surfing spots.

Swiss 2 bedroom cottage / chalet / bungalow (four person)

Liked: The holiday park is green and shady with lots of open areas to roam and play. The playground was a big hit and the chalet was comfortable, with all the necessary mod cons. Big plus the beach is just a stones throw away and the bike path right into Busselton or Dunsborough is also just outside.

Disliked: Nil

Local attractions

On a break with the kids? Number-one on the bucket list may well be the marine wonders at Busselton Jetty’s Underwater Observatory (10 minutes’ drive) for 360-degree views of an artificial reef with a wafting forest of brightly coloured tropical corals as well as sponges, fish and invertebrates. At Yallingup Maze (25 minutes), challenge your family’s brainpower in the timber labyrinth, and there are fairground rides for younger kids and a petting farm at Country Life Farm (15 minutes). Cool down on the water rides at Xcape at the Cape (10 minutes), or keep cool by trying several of the numerous flavours at Simmos Ice Creamery (15 minutes) , where the kids can work up an appetite for a second ice-cream on the 18-hole mini-golf course. They’ll most likely love the ice-cream-eating emus too. There are beaches aplenty to choose between, from Meelup Beach (20 minutes) for barbecues, paddleboarding and snorkelling, to the white sands and clear water for swimming at Dunsborough Beach (15 minutes). And at Canal Rocks (half an hour), a timber walkway leading between the bizarre rock formations offers spectacular views of the ocean.
