  • Quiet site in Indian Ocean-side Carnarvon, Western Australia
  • A 10-minute drive to the beach; 45 minutes from Quobba Blow Holes
  • Barbecue area, well-equipped kitchen and laundry plus shops nearby
Travelling on the Coral Coast Highway and looking for an overnighter, or intending to hang around and discover the area? Whatever your reason for being here, Norwesta Lifestyle Park is a chilled spot for hunkering down for a few days, on the outskirts of Carnarvon in WA, and 900km north of Perth. Being close to the mouth of Gascoyne river on the Indian Ocean, there’s masses to do on the water, so bring fishing lines, the boat and jet skis and get out there. Thanks to the dry, desert climate here, you can still have fun on the beach during winter too. Bring the kids and the dogs (there’s green grass for them) and do some serious exploring along the Coral Coast, or head inland to lakes, creeks and nature reserves. This fully powered site is just off the main road, in a quiet location but still really handy for the local supermarket, bakery and bottle shop, as well as laidback beach cafés and takeouts. If you don’t fancy those options, the camp kitchen kitted out with barbecues grills, microwaves and bench seating, you can cook for yourselves and be as sociable as you want – meet up with other guests to swap tales of your day’s adventures or do your own thing. It’s up to you. Other spotless amenities on the holiday park include an ablution block with showers, and large washing machines in the laundry to make your life on the road easy.

Local attractions

Miaboolya Beach (20 minutes’ drive) beckons all year round for sea fishing, Pelican Point Road’s (10 minutes) your spot for kite surfing, and there are snorkelling beaches and Insta-worthy rocky landscapes around Quobba Blow Holes (45 minutes). When you’ve had enough of the water, walk out over the ocean at One Mile Jetty (10 minutes) or take the kids to see where the first Aussie TV programme was broadcast from the mast at Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum (five minutes). Top of your to-do list might be a couple of days discovering the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, where you can spot dolphins, dugong and sea lions (hopefully), go bush walking or drive the Top Trail from Monkey Mia (three hours 30 minutes) to Overlander (two hours). Closer to base and away from the ocean, One Tree Point Nature Reserve (15 minutes) is a cracking spot for birding and hiking, and there’s a great wild swimming pool and picnic area in Chinaman’s Pool Nature Reserve (10 minutes).
