  • Peaceful rural Victoria site centred around a historic homestead
  • In the Macedon Ranges, 15 minutes' drive from Hanging Rock
  • Tea room and gallery on site amid well-kept mature gardens and woods
Pick a pitch at Dromkeen and you may feel a little like you’ve stepped back in time – this site in the Macedon Ranges is part of a stately National Trust estate with gorgeous gardens centred around a historic homestead dating from around 1889. The peaceful rural atmosphere and sense of the past make this a fabulous place to spend a few days – pitches are large, grassy and shaded by trees, and you’ll be able to wander around the gardens at will, looking out for the resident alpacas and peacocks as you walk among a range of Australian native and European plants. There’s an air of history here too – some of the trees are more than 100 years old, according to the National Trust register. It’s worth taking your walks at different times of day if you can – during the day you’ll be able to drop in to the tea rooms (open Wednesday-Saturday 10am-5pm) and gallery (where you can see original Australian book illustrations) and in the evening you may well spot Dromkeen’s resident kangaroos coming out of the bush. As for the location, that’s pretty great too – Dromkeen is on the edge of the little hamlet of Riddells Creek, just over a mile from its shops, farmers’ market and places to eat. Bigger Gisborne is about 10 minutes’ drive up the road and Melbourne Airport is about half an hour away. To preserve the historic feeling of the place, the facilities have been kept on the simple side, so you’ll have access to toilets but please note there are no showers.

Unpowered grass and earth site

Liked: The view was spectacular. The homestead was incredible. Bernadette is absolutely wonderful. Dromkeen is a hidden gem. We enjoyed sitting in the cafe having coffee and cake. I strolled through the gallery countless times. Then back at the camp site you feel remote and removed from it all. It’s such a wonderful spot. Having the toilet block is also a fabulous asset while camping.

Disliked: Nothing! It was better than I could have expected.

Local attractions

Start your explorations in your closest settlement, Riddells Creek – it’s well known for the geese that live on the village lake. On the edge of the village, Conglomerate Gully (10 minutes’ drive) has one of the best dry eucalypt forest walks around, with a trail of an hour or so taking you through the woods and grasslands and past a stream (it’s particularly fine in spring, when native orchids burst into life). For more walking trails and climbing spots, head to the volcanic formations of Hanging Rock (15 minutes) or out into Macedon Regional Park (25 minutes) for several multipurpose trails. The area has plenty of wineries where you can reward yourself with a well-earned glass after you’ve completed your walk (or pick up a bottle for back at your pitch). If you’ve not managed to spot much wildlife on site, join an expedition with Kanga Tours (15 minutes) or set off to Dingo Discovery Sanctuary (20 minutes) to find out more about these Australian icons.
