  • Quiet three-acre rural Victoria campsite on the banks of Myrtle Creek
  • Bendigo, Mount Alexander and Lake Eppalock within a half-hour drive
  • Simple facilities; great spot for stargazing and wildlife watching
Here’s a fabulous spot for folk really looking to get out into rural Victoria for some serious relaxation time. About an hour and a half’s drive from central Melbourne (and half an hour from the historic city of Bendigo) is Lokuttara, a peaceful three-acre campground on the banks of Myrtle Creek with a backdrop of sheep paddocks, equestrian properties and nature reserves. With surroundings like that, it’s probably no surprise to hear that this is a lovely place to chill out for a little while, rousing yourselves only for simple outings like walking along the banks of the creek in search of an eagle’s nest, riding bikes along the local dirt roads or taking to the tracks of Pilchers Bridge Nature Conservation Reserve to spot some wildlife. Meanwhile, if you’re into your metal detecting it may intrigue you to know that gold was mined in this area in the late 19th century… If you’re trying to soothe a frazzled mind you may well choose to stick around on the campsite for much of your trip, but if you don’t mind a drive of half an hour or so there’s a good bunch of things to see and do around the area, including fishing, watersports and hiking at Lake Eppalock and winery tours at vineyards around Mount Alexander (ask on site and the owner can usually sort you out with a tour of a nearby vineyard). Back at camp it’s all about embracing the simple things like lighting a campfire and staring up at the stars unhindered by any urban light pollution. Likewise, facilities are low key – there’s no hot water or drinking water supply here, but you’ll have access to a compost toilet and some picnic tables.

Local attractions

There’s a lot to be said for simply spending some time in and around the campsite, enjoying the peace and looking out for wildlife, and perhaps widening your horizons by wandering out into Pilchers Bridge Nature Conservation Reserve, a short stroll away. There are more scenic walks to be had along the shores of Lake Eppalock (25 minutes’ drive), where you can also go fishing, have a swim or try your hand at waterskiing. There are boat ramps and barbecues around the lake’s edge too so you can easily make a day of it. Mount Alexander (half an hour) is also worth a day trip, to stop in at its wineries, Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and Jirrahlinga Dingo Conservation & Wildlife Centre. Likewise, Bendigo (half an hour) has plenty to see, including the Central Deborah Gold Mine, Golden Dragon Museum and Bendigo Art Gallery.
