  • Spacious holiday park deep in the South Australian bush
  • A 15-minute drive from Penola and an hour from the coast
  • Pet-friendly, bordered by a lake and vineyard; fishing possible
Planning to tour the various vineyards north of Penola? Then say g'day to Coonawarra Bush Holiday Park, a spacious and outdoorsy spot as relaxing as it is remote. As well as the parts that are kept green and well-maintained for guests, the folk who own this place also have around 200 acres of virgin bush to their name and have created two outback trails. Whether you opt for the longer or the shorter route, scan the landscape for wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas and wombats – the critters here have never been harassed by humans, making them all the more quizzical in their interactions with passers-by. In September, the campground team can help you forage for Morel mushrooms, a tasty savoury treat that can fetch well over a hundred dollars a kilo at big city markets. Marron and yabby can also be caught at the lake most of the year. As you'll have gathered, Coonawarra Bush Holiday Park caters to foodies, nature-hunters and fans of the good life. It follows, then, that there's plenty of wine to be had around here, with more than 25 cellar door spots located within 20 kilometres. If you're planning on sampling the wares, the park's handy shuttle can take up to seven guests out to the best of them for an extra charge.

Local attractions

Want the low-down on what kinds of grapes to expect? Cabernet Sauvignon does well in the rich soil in this part of South Australia, meaning there's a fine range of bordeaux-style wines to discover. So lip-smackingly good are these Antipodean reds that they've come to rival the French original – although perhaps it's worth taking a generous gulp of both before making up your mind, just to be on the safe side… There's more to life than wine, though, and it must be admitted that vineyard-hopping isn't the most kid-friendly of activities. With that in mind, perhaps plump for a trip to Penola Fantasy Theme Park and Model Railway (15 minutes' drive). You can also take your brood for outdoor strolls along the Bool Lagoon (20 minutes), one of southern Australia's largest and most diverse freshwater habitats. Also of note are the cracking Engelbrecht Caves in Mount Gambier (50 minutes), a great potential pit-stop as you wend your way towards the Limestone Coast. Brilliant bathing spots to try along this lush stretch of sandy shores include Beachport, Southend and Carpenter Rocks (all of which are around an hour's drive).
