  • Family holiday park on the South Coast beachfront in New South Wales
  • Mogo Wildlife Park 10 minutes’ drive; Birdland Animal Park 15 minutes
  • Swimming pool and games room; camp kitchen, café and shared barbecues
Five minutes’ drive from the town of Tomakin and covering 22 acres of South Coast beachfront in New South Wales, Barlings Beach Holiday Park is a cracker of a spot for carefree family breaks in the sun. Kids of all ages are looked after well, with a saltwater swimming pool for splashing around in, a games arcade to distract any mutinous teens, and a guest lounge with a large-screen TV where they can meet up with new-found friends. When it comes to catering, you’ll be pleased to hear that there are communal barbecues and picnic areas, an indoor dining space and a camp kitchen for rustling up alfresco meals. And if that doesn’t hit the spot, a constant supply of snacks can be sourced from the on-site café. The holiday park edges a nature-lover’s paradise to keep everyone happily busy: clean and sandy unspoilt beaches for swimming, rock pools for rootling around in, river banks for picnic, swimming and surfing, pristine local waterways for fishing… There are no busy roads to cross to get to the beach, so you can simply step outside your holiday home and casually stroll across the dunes and – hey presto – you’re on the ocean. And while Barlings Beach is a laid-back, beachy sort of place, it’s also close to clubs, cafés and artisan boutiques in the lively towns of Batemans Bay and Moruya (both 15 minutes’ drive), where you can also stock up on shopping essentials.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Very family friendly, lots of open space for kids to ride their bikes, and capped speed limit of 10km/hr. The unpowered tent side we had was very close to the swimming pool and games room, half way between each amenities block, and a short walk to the beach. It was a good location within the camp. The campground itself is conveniently located, with Mogo Zoo and Batemans Bay shops only a short car ride away. Very friendly and helpful staff. I liked the little free book exchange inside the laundry area.

Disliked: The playground is a little old, and the gate needs to be fixed, but really this only a minor dislike.

Local attractions

With a legacy stretching back several millennia, the local region of Eurobodalla has unspoilt beaches, islands, rivers and lakes galore. Heritage towns and coastal villages are waiting to be explored, along with vast tracts of nature reserve and wilderness. So what are the highlights? First in line may be feeding kangaroos and joeys at Birdland Animal Park (15 minutes’ drive), getting up close to wombats and wallabies, and strolling forest paths along the waterfront to spot all manner of other native Australian animals, birds and reptiles. For close encounters with endangered African big cats and rhinos, turn inland for a day trip to Mogo Wildlife Park (10 minutes). Protected Montague Island (take a boat ride from Narooma, an hour) has NSW’s most important little penguin and fur seal colonies; it’s home to a landmark 19th-century lighthouse (open for tours) and is also known for its long association with Aboriginal heritage. Learn more about local history at The Original Gold Rush Colony (10 minutes), where life during the 1850s Gold Rush is brought to life as you pan for gold and explore the former gold mine.
