Cardiff Alpacas: Ancient fig tree on site (photo added by manager on 18/10/2022)

General

  • Wildlife haven on a Clarence Valley sugarcane, llama and alpaca farm
  • A 20-minute drive from Angourie and 40 minutes from Grafton
  • Portable toilets and showers available; home-cooked meals available

What’s life like on a sugarcane farm? Well, with grinning alpacas and llamas and open greens as far as the eyes can see, life is certainly sweet. Find a spot among the grassy sites at Cardiff Alpacas, a family-friendly working alpaca farm where you can stay in the Clarence Valley among wild rivers, wetlands and mauve Jacaranda trees. And within 40 minutes’ drive from Grafton and 20 minutes to Angourie, this Harwood Island campground is well within reach of several surf-heavy sandy beaches.

With 35 acres of carefully maintained pastures and shade from trees, this is a peaceful wild campground with no toilet and shower facilities. However, guests can hire portable toilets and shower units in fixed locations.

The whole family tagging along? No problem… take them along a tour of the campground and see how the farm processes alpaca fleece into products, visit the farm kiosk on the campground to pick up some local produce, and make sure all mouths are fed with a range of home-cooked meals available on the campground.

The village of Harwood Island itself has more opportunities to dip into the local gastronomy, with a riverside pub within five minutes’ drive. After all, it’s almost certain you’ll have worked up an appetite after a day spent sailing, cycling, or fishing your way along the river valley.

Easy booking process. Great comms from hosts. Friendly welcome from Rob & Kathleen. As only a few campers are allowed at any one time, they make your stay personal. They introduced us to most of the alpacas & llamas! Plenty of field space to camp or run about! Gave good advice on local pub - Harwood Hotel usually runs a free pick up service, but was unavailable while we were there, so a good 45 min walk! Fabulous Full English Breakfast delivered to our motorhome. Good time spent in shop learning about alpaca wool process, & sharing Robs' knowledge on his vintage cars & tractors. Went above & beyond to make me a llama & a beanie hat in my colour choice (Murphy Green!). Will definitely try to stay there again the next time we travel to Australia. We have already told our fellow campers about Cardiff Alpacas, & would certainly recommend them to all campers who are looking for peace & quite, wide open spaces, & a unique experience.
Many thanks to Rob & Kathleen for being great hosts!
    Dawn, Rob & Amanda.

Wonderful ‘off grid’ place to stay. Loved the quiet atmosphere of the farm and the chance to interact with the llamas and alpacas. Kathleen and Robert were wonderful hosts. Breakfast was especially amazing. Coffee and tea served in silver service set out on the lawn.

We loved our 4 night stay here, the hosts were very welcoming and attentive throughout our stay. The farm tour was informative and the kids (and adults) loved feeding the alpacas and lamas. We were even lucky enough to have two cria(baby) born during our stay and the kids could even hold them. The grounds were kept tidy with lush green grass for the kids to run around on. It’s only a short drive to Maclean (great Chinese and awesome coffee at Boltero. Only 15min to Yamba and the Clarence River where we caught lots of flathead and bream.
We would highly recommend Cardiff Alpacas and will definitely stay again when back up this way.

Local attractions

Is that purple rain? No, it’s just the mauve shades of the Jacaranda trees lining the streets of Grafton (40 minutes’ drive). You can see them in their full glory in See Park (40 minutes). And when the craving for more jaw-dropping scenery hits, head to ‘the Scottish town in Australia’, Maclean (10 minutes), where you can fish against a backdrop of valley views.

For world-class swells, head to Angourie (20 minutes), where surfing and fishing is part and parcel of the seaside town, and swimming in the freshwater Angourie Blue and Green Pools (25 minutes) is a rite of passage. Spooky Beach (20 minutes) isn’t as fearsome as it sounds, with a sandy stretch to unwind on.

Nearby Yamba (20 minutes) has more surfing beaches and a wander-worthy reel of sights, including Flinders Well, Yamba Lighthouse and the Yamba Historical Museum.

Although it may be further to go, but the Everlasting Swamp National Park (an hour) is a rare sight worth the trip, and your best chance to glimpse rare species of birds among the wetlands.
