  • Spacious campground on the banks of the Buna River, in Shkodër county
  • Shkodër 15 minutes’ drive; Velipoja Beach 40 minutes
  • Private beach and kayaks for hire; children’s play area; restaurant
If you want to be greeted by a warm, Australian-style ‘G’day mate’ while travelling around Albania, head to the county of Shkodër, in the north west of the country. It is here, just off the E851 road, that an Australian family has set up Camping Australia. At this peaceful campground, spacious sites come with views of the surrounding hills and Rozafa Castle (15 minutes’ drive), but better still, they are right on the banks of the Buna River, which you can explore by paddleboard or kayak (available to hire on site, if you don’t have your own). There are also plenty of sun loungers set up on the grass, so you can chill while watching the river roll lazily past – or while watching the kids as they play by the swings or chase each other (or the family dog) on the lawn. Another way to make the most of the proximity to the river is by indulging in a spot of fishing. The current around this stretch of the river is very weak, and the water is crystal clear – and equally pleasant for a dip and a swim. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a glass-walled dining room with (close to) 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. For the full 360-degree experience, in good weather you can eat alfresco – either on the grass or on the roof of the restaurant. If you want to take a deep dive into Albanian cuisine, there are several restaurants in nearby Oblikë (five minutes) and in Shkodër (15 minutes). Other on-site amenities include a toilet/shower block, a washing-up area and a laundry.

Local attractions

On the outskirts of Shkodër are the ruins of Rozafa Castle, a hilltop fortress that changed hands several times during its long history, from the Romans to the Venetians and the Ottomans. In Shkodër city, check out the slender minarets and splendid cupola of the Xhamia e Madhe - Ebu Bekr mosque. Active types might want to climb the Maja e Golishit mountain (20 minutes’ drive), whose long ridge gives you far-reaching views of both Shkodra Lake (to the east) and the Adriatic Sea (to the west). Buna River - Velipoja (25 minutes) is a protected area of wetlands and forests with shaded trails. You might have seen it from the ridge of Maja e Golishit; now it’s time to swim in it: the Adriatic Sea. Velipoja Beach (40 minutes) is a sandy stretch with shallow, sheltered waters. From there, take a stroll to Derdhja e Bunës, Albania’s northernmost point along the coast, on the Buna River estuary.
