  • Leafy, family-friendly campsite on the outskirts of Rrëshen in Lezhë
  • Spaç Prison 40 minutes’ drive and Ulza Regional Nature Park 55 minutes
  • Restaurant and bar serving homegrown and local produce on site
Tucked away on a rural smallholding five minutes’ drive from the village of Rrëshen in Lezhë, Kamping Lakosa is a relaxed, family-friendly campsite with well-maintained and spacious grass pitches shaded by trees and bordering a river. Kids will adore the fact that ducks, chicks and geese – as well as the occasional piglet – have a free run of the place. The welcoming owners also have a cosy on-site bar, with informal seating where you can watch TV, and a restaurant with a menu of traditional Albanian dishes created from the fresh organic produce – including the cheese and meat – grown on their land. You can also settle in the sun at an alfresco eating area with a barbecue and picnic seating set among the trees. There’s a play area for younger guests right in front of the restaurant, so parents can keep an eye on their kids as they eat. Need more sporting activity? There’s fishing on the river, and space around the leafy pitches for everyone to have a run around playing tennis, boules or ping-pong. If you don’t have your kit with you, bats, balls and rackets can be borrowed from reception.

Local attractions

The local town of Rrëshen (five minutes’ drive) is a lively spot with one of Albania’s largest cathedrals, a red-brick minimalist edifice completed in 2002. Daily life revolves around the labyrinthine Old Bazaar, where you can source Albanian crafts like filigree jewellery, brightly patterned rugs or blankets, and delicate lace tablecloths. A number of restaurants dot the streets, alongside a couple of wine bars selling the local fruit brandy version of raki. The countryside around Rrëshen is a hub for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. You can also fish and go whitewater rafting on the Drin River (five minutes), go yomping along forested trails or kayak around the turquoise lake in the Ulza Regional Nature Park (55 minutes). For a powerful insight into Albania as a communist country under dictator Enver Hoxha, take a free tour of the daunting, concrete Spaç Prison (40 minutes), a former labour camp set among remote mountainous countryside. Although it is now half ruined, you can still make out graffiti in the tiny cells from which political prisoners were forced to work in the copper mine nearby.
