  • Eco-friendly family camping in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Tenby half an hour’s drive; Manor Wildlife Park 25 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; firepits available
If you’re after a camping break in south-west Wales that's got a sustainable vibe and welcomes offspring and pets, you’ve found it at Grass Roots Caravan and Glamping, where the owners are working towards becoming carbon neutral. Set in 4.5 acres of peaceful Pembrokeshire countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Milford Haven, the site is right on the long-distance Pembrokeshire Coast Path – just the job for scenic wanderings with the kids and dogs. As camping wouldn’t be camping without a campfire to cosy up around, firepits are available – you can pre-order a bag of sustainable firewood for your arrival or bring your own from home. Pick up barbecue supplies from the supermarkets in Pembroke (15 minutes' drive), and if you’re not an advocate of open-air cooking, there are several pubs and fish and chip shops within 10 minutes’ drive. Handy facilities include a modern toilet and shower block with separate amenities for men and women, a utility room for keeping all utensils spick and span, and a washing machine for ensuring that the family look respectable (there’s a small charge per load).

What customers say

Great little spot! Friendly, clean, with roomy sites. Owners are a treat, and the alpacas and goats are a hit. Facilities are usually spick and span, though a few found showers/toilets a bit tight when it's busy. Perfect base for exploring, excellent value and highly recommended for a chillout.

Unpowered grass tent or caravan site

Liked Friendly welcome from the host, good pitches and fantastic to have alpacas in the adjoining field. The site also offers alpaca walks and feeding, and there is also mini golf. Great location for exploring the area

Disliked No hot water for showers whilst I was there, although I am sure this was a temporary issue

Liked Quiet and small site.
Bathroom and washing facilities were good , although one shower might be a bit of a issue if it was busy.
Electric available which was great
Good location and easy to get everywhere we planned on visiting.
If you need a freezer for ice blocks you can use this or swap them over which was useful (ending up buying a cooler in Lidl though whilst we were there!)

Liked Lovely set up, brilliant for children with alpacas, crazy golf and a park... importantly easy access with the caravan too!!
Everyone was so helpful - would visit again

Disliked As the popularity of the site grows more toilets and showers will be needed as there is currently only 2 female toilets and one shower, but didn't cause us an issue whilst we were there

Local attractions

Whether you all love llamas or have a passion for tigers, Manor Wildlife Park (25 minutes' drive) has got you covered. Let animal-mad kids be keepers for the day at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour), and let toddlers loose in the play barn. If it’s beaches the family is longing for, favourite sandy expanses in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park include Marloes Sands and Freshwater (both half an hour). You can also explore local islands on boat trips: departures from Martin’s Haven (half an hour) take you to Skomer Island, home to thousands of puffins, Manx Shearwater and seals. If you’d like to up the adrenaline levels a tad further, the national park also provides a spectacular backdrop for coasteering, a heady mix of scrambling, swimming and jumping along the base of the sea cliffs – keep an eye out for whales and dolphins as you go. Firmly back on dry land, have a wander around the streets of pretty Tenby (half an hour), lined with pastel-coloured houses, galleries and indie shops. Check out the exhibitions at mighty medieval Pembroke Castle (15 minutes), standing proud over its namesake river, or visit St Davids Cathedral (45 minutes), tucked away in the UK’s smallest city.
