Overlooking the sea

  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • Farm shop, coffee hut, bar and pizzas available in high season
Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas. You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you). The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele. Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: in the high season, a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. A bar and pizzas are also available at peak times.

What customers say

Stunning coastal spot with beach access and epic sea views. Lots of space, friendly staff, handy courtyard shop/cafe/bar/pizza. Facilities generally good & clean, though a bit dated for some. Expect great views and walks, but water supply, wind and price can be hit and miss. Top recommendation for beach lovers and families.

3-amp Carn Llidi View powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Spectacular views, lovely site, a family get together and we had tents, campervan and caravan. Exceptionally friendly staff, well stocked shop, coffee, cakes and bar and pizza in the evening. I didn't use the toilet and shower , had my own in caravan but family did and said clean and tidy. Hair drying facility and I think I saw a washing up area but didn't use it myself.
Pitches are spacious with EHU if required. We were spaced out depending what we had, ie tent or van but near enough to meet up for evening get together. BBQ are allowed as long as grass is protected.
Short walk across field with access to the coastal path and beach. St David's was a 20 minute walk along the path. Dog friendly, My dog loved the small beach each morning and evening and we watched people swimming in the sea. There is no club house per se, just a nice outside area with tables and chairs under a cover and sockets for charging phones etc and I didn't see facilities for children but wasn't looking because we were all adults. Probably on the pricey side compared with others nearby but I think location made up for that.

Disliked No dislikes, access to camp site is narrow and a bit bumpy with the van on the back but OK

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land. There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months. Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
