Beautiful, spaced out site
Llys-y-fran lake

  • Family-run, dog-friendly site 300 metres from Llys-y-Frân Reservoir
  • A 15-minute drive to Preseli Hills; half an hour to the coast
  • Campfires allowed; watersports and cycling tracks on the lake nearby
Heading to Pembrokeshire in hunt of bays, Iron Age villages and streets lined with Georgian houses? Perhaps a peaceful place to touch down in a meadow, just 300 metres from the Llys y Frân Country Park & Reservoir? If you’d like to roll out of bed and get stuck into watersports or end your day with a wander along the lakeside, the dog-friendly family farm site at Llys-Y-Frân Meadow Campsite is a peaceful spot to lay your head down in West Wales, just outside the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing or open water swimming… with Llys-y-Frân Reservoir five minutes’ stroll away from the site, watersports can certainly be on the cards. Or, if you’d rather keep on dry land, the lake has a splendid seven-mile walk and 14 kilometres of bicycle tracks (including pump bike tracks). Back at base, you may want to set up a campfire, look at the stars or listen out for the wildlife around the site. With plenty of space in the meadow, children have room to stretch their legs or splash around in the stream (and well-behaved dogs on leads can join them, too). Tell the kids to keep an eye out for farmer Nigel on his rounds. Hosts Rachel and Nigel are always happy to point out cows and sheep grazing in the pastures or help you map out your way to Maenclochog (five minutes’ drive), the local traditional Welsh village with a small food shop, cosy café and village pub.

What customers say

Great family spot with clean facilities, awesome play area, and spacious sites near Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. Owners Rachel and Nigel are super welcoming, pizza nights are a winner. Minor queues for showers/toilets at busy times, but a top recommendation.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked This was our first time camping with our 3 and 6 year old boys and dog.
Facilities were very clean and more than we expected. Never any wait to use the toilets or showers. The campsite bake their own pizza’s on Friday night which were delicious! Plenty of space for the children to play and stay safe. Site owner came at least twice a day to clean facilities and check that everyone was ok. Log fire pits available to hire which was a nice touch. Only a few minutes walk into Llys y Fran itself. We really enjoyed and would definitely return.

Liked Lovely, small campsite with spotlessly clean facilities. Very peaceful location. Children loved the playground especially the swing. Pizza night was a nice and delicious surprise. Yes, there are only two showers and two toilets but we didn't have any issues with that.

Powered grass site

Liked We absolutely loved our stay here. The welcome and hospitality was brilliant and our young children had the best time exploring and playing in the park. The location was great- we had already planned to have various day trips around the coast- from St Davids up to New Quay- so Llys-Y-Fran was perfectly placed for this. Facilities and space were great- always clean and plenty of room. A very memorable holiday, would definitely recommend and go back. No negative points to raise.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Pleasant location, host Rachel very friendly and accommodating. Clean facilities with well stocked honesty shop. Well maintained grounds. Great kids play area. Great proximity to reservoir activity centre. Stay here if you like water sports or biking!

Amazing fresh pizza on Friday night too!

Lovely and peaceful in the main, amazing sunsets and starscape at night.

Disliked Only 2 toilets and 2 showers so get in there quick for morning and evening routines! Also only one washing up sink for the entire campsite so some waiting. Toilets and showers have small doors so I was eyeballing passers by while getting dressed and the gap at the bottom didn't fill me with confidence. Gaps in the timbers and open tops and sides meant zero privacy from others "activities"!

Hard to remedy but the majority of the site is on a slight slope. Not much of an issue other than little one kept rolling off her mattress every night!

On the last evening a huge group (between 20 and 30 Inc kids) turned up and took over the campsite. Kids screaming until half nine at night, riding bikes and shouting past other tents...and the adults singing shouting and playing music until half eleven at least (I had to let them know that one of their kids was screaming for mummy at about half ten- they couldn't hear him).

Then in the morning around half seven they began tidying up clinking beer bottles etc. Glad it was our last night and leaving in the morning to be honest. It would be nice if the quiet hours were enforced more strictly.

From the manager: Sorry to hear this, I wasn't aware of any noise disturbance. I always try my best to ensure that our guests have a pleasant stay, it is unusual for guests to be up late at night. It is always useful to know of any problems at the time so I can deal with them.

Buttercup Dreams bell tent

Liked What an amazing campsite! Beautifully located, beautifully designed and thought out and well just beautiful. We had a lovely 3 day stay in the Bell tent on site, which had a handy undercover shelter leaving more room inside the already amble sized tent, we are a family of 5 and it comfortably took 3 double mattresses with lots of space left over. The campsite had a brilliant park, football pitch and swing for the kids, as well as clean modern and again beautifully decorated showers, toilets and sinks. The charging boxes are a brilliant idea also! The lovely host kept us updated before arriving with lots of handy tips on the area and campsite itself aswell as being available via text when onsite if you wished to order logs or had any queries. Nothing seemed to much and we felt welcomed on the campsite. Thank you for a lovely stay, we will be back!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The location is great next to the lakes and in a beautiful part of the world. Electric available to charge phones. Loved the peaceful surroundings and freedom of the field to pitch, where you are not on top of each other.

Disliked The only thing I could honestly say is there probably needs to be another block for toilet/ shower and washing up. If the site got busy then it could cause a problem but for our stay it was all good.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you, our pitch numbers are small so we don't have a problem with the site getting very busy. We love the small, safe, family friendly feel to it.

Local attractions

What to sniff out first? A hike through the Preseli Hills (15 minutes’ drive) to see the Castell Henllys Iron Age Village (25 minutes) or the National Trust’s Cilgerran Castle (35 minutes)? Perhaps the coast might be the first to call your attention. If so, the sandy stretch at Newgale beach (half an hour) is fit for surfing and kitesurfing. There are pastel-coloured Georgian houses in the harbour at Tenby (40 minutes), the dunes and church at Broad Haven beach (half an hour), the dragonflies at Lilly Ponds (50 minutes) or a splendid bay along the coastal path at Barafundle Bay Beach (50 minutes). Up north, Cardigan (half an hour) and Newport (25 minutes) have more compact beaches. And to the west, history fans will want to scout out St Davids (40 minutes) for its cathedral… or perhaps Pembrokeshire’s castles, such as Pembroke Castle (40 minutes) and Carew Castle and Tidal Mill (half an hour). Narberth (20 minutes) has all the scents of a market town… browse cheeses, meats and wines, sample artisan ice cream or sip on gin and craft ales. There are independent shops selling antiques, jewellery and homeware if you fancy a shopping spree.
