General

  • Peaceful site on the Afon Dewi Fawr river, two miles from St Clears
  • Friendly helpful team, firepits, picnic tables and spotless amenities
  • Birdwatching and stargazing haven

Lakeside Leisure is a peaceful site centred around a lake and bordered by the Afon Dewi Fawr river, two miles north of St Clears.

The town's restaurants, pubs and supermarket are within easy reach but the site maintains a quiet rural atmosphere where you can relax in natural surroundings. Buzzards and kites often fly overhead, and Canadian geese land on the lake, making this a good area for birdwatching. The lack of light pollution also means you can expect good stargazing on a clear night.

Activities nearby include riding, walking in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and a range of watersports in Pendine. The local area also plenty of attractions to visit, including castles, gardens and museums.

Lakeside Leisure has a clean shower/toilet block for guests' use.

the pitch was a good size.

    Disliked:

the track towards the site was very muddy i got stuck twice i think the whole road needs to have gravel put down. only one shower and one toilet Then storm francis hit, the owner was very unhelpful, we stayed in a b+b monday night unsure that the children would sleep through high winds. early hours tuesday morning we found out 9 people had to be rescued as the site was flooded. we lost our tent on pitch 2 our neighbours on pitch 3 also had their tent ruined. we tried several times to contact Bradley yet he was unavailable i sent an email requesting a refund as i felt it was due to his negligence we lost our tent, we are still waiting. if you read review of pitch 4 that was where his own tent was pitched !!

Lovely small site, great views of the lake and river and lots of nature, facilities were small, but sufficient and well maintained. Friendly owner.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately storm Francis struck halfway through our stay so some serious flooding meant we had to cut the visit short. No fault of the ownership who put out weather warnings by text on the day we set off.

  • Liked:

It was very reasonably priced and was in a beautiful part of the country. Peaceful as it’s only a small site.If the sun had continued to shine it would have been lovely as the ground would have been dry.

    Disliked:

Lots of mud, particularly on the road which made it difficult to drive to your pitch and you had to walk along that road to the toilets.
Some of the pitches were unusable due to mud.
The solar powered lights on the toilet run out before dark.

  • Private Island non-electric forest floor tent pitch
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

    Not alot

    Disliked:

Lack of clean facilities, lack of facilities in general, poor tracks, field pitches boggy, road boggy, lake half empty, previous campers mess just swept to the side, bottles and balloons. Dirty water bottles hanging from trees. No staff support at all. Noisy party all night with smell of drugs and explosions. The place has been left to rot. Nothing like the pictures. No cleaning of the toilet. No loo roll in the island pitch. All in all. Very poor. Close to a noisy road.

Hot water even in the morning. Large size of grass pitch with burner provided.

    Disliked:

No light, at the toilet or shower, in the night. Overflowing bins. Washing station has a tiny sink. Muddy trails. The lake was a muddy pond. Had a continous worry about my almost 2 year old, the he will fall in water as the pond didn't have any kind of fence. Not safe for small children.

Quiet, peaceful settings with the gentle tumble of water in the river and the occasional rumble of a tractor going past.

Plenty of space in our pitch area.

Great little site for location to our family who live in Johnstown and a local co-op just a minutes drive away.

    Disliked:

As the weather was wet the path/track to the toilet was very wet and muddy in places where the shingle hadn't been laid. Perhaps more could be laid from the entrance up to the island?

The toilet needed a solar light that came on during the night, not the day!

Local attractions

Stroll, cycle or drive the two and a half miles to St Clears on the River Taf to potter around the town's pubs or to take the free St Clears guided trail, a walk of a mile and a half guided by audio commentary (pick up handsets at the Gate on Pentre Rd from Monday to Saturdays).

From St Clears, it's five miles' or about 10 minutes' drive to Laugharne, famed as the last home of Welsh bard Dylan Thomas. The Dylan Thomas Boathouse, where Thomas lived for the last four years of his life, is now a visitor attraction and museum, and includes a tearoom said to have among the best afternoon teas in all the UK.

For active days, the seven-mile stretch of Pendine Sands beach (25 minutes' drive) is a top spot for surfing, kayaking and paddleboarding for all ages, while coasteering, archery, ziplining, caving, abseiling and other activities can all be sorted from Morfa Bay Adventure within the same distance.

If you'd rather soar above ground than go underneath it, the National Trust's Colby Woodland Garden (also 25 minutes) just over the border in Pembrokeshire has rope swings to monkey around on, as well as regular activities like campfire building and den building to try.
