  • Quiet countryside park next to Llandovery RFC rugby union club
  • Just outside the Brecon Beacons and a 10-minute walk into Llandovery
  • Clubhouse open for food and drink Thursday to Saturday evenings
If your fondness for rugby is matched only by your devotion to dawdling, Llandovery Caravan and Camping Park could be the Carmarthenshire site for you. Sitting just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park – for walks in Welsh wilderness – this place is attached to Llandovery RFC rugby union club. Even if you’re not a fan of the game, the site makes a brill base for tackling the treks in south Wales’ most scenic area. It’s also niftily located – the grounds are about 10 minutes’ stroll via a flat route into Llandovery town for pubs, shops, a public pool, a theatre and a heritage centre with tourist information on the Brecon Beacons and the surrounding area. Info collected, venture into the national park for watery hikes around Llyn y Fan Fach, home to the legend of the Lady of the Lake (40 minutes’ drive), stopping by the Red Kite Feeding Station (20 minutes) on the way to see these winged creatures that have made a welcome comeback after almost becoming extinct. Closer to home, the River Tywi – the longest river inside Wales and a top spot for salmon fishing – is a few minutes’ walk away, while further afield are historical spots like the Talley Abbey ruins (25 minutes) and Carreg Cennen Castle (35 minutes). Places of a cultural nature are in Llandeilo, like the National Trust’s Dinefwr Park and Castle and the Newton House art museum and gallery (both around 15 minutes’ drive). Pick up a pint and some food at the rugby club (open between Thursday evenings and Saturday evenings) while the kids race around the play area. Other amenities on site include showers and toilets, disabled facilities, free wifi, chemical disposal, a launderette and a washing-up area. There are also rubbish and recycling bins. Barbecues are welcome, just as long as they're raised off the ground.

Power optional concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Nice wide pitch , water and power close to hand , good facilities, friendly staff , quite cheap

Disliked: Doesn’t say on the listing for the site that it’s on the back of an industrial site next to a rugby field that is being re turfed by aload of workers who start their roller at 7.00 am and there’s loads of static campers on the site almost like a storage yard

Power optional concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Nice quiet site Easy walk into Llandovery Toilets and showers very clean

Disliked: 1. Bit rough around the edges, there was a sign for washing-up on an area that hadn't been used for years - sinks open to the elements so full of leaves etc - why not just remove the sign? 2. Shower block just says toilets and showers, doesn't say washing-up or drinking water - see 1 3. The gentleman of the warden couple was a bit taciturn, not very welcoming

Power optional concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: There was loads of open space for the kids to run and play, the grass was well mown and lovely. The kids really enjoyed the little play park on site. The facilities were really clean, regularly mopped and cleaned up. Good hot showers, nice hot water for washing up too. The washing machine and dryer on site were a good idea! The seasonal pitched caravanners were really friendly and helpful. This is a bigger campsite than we would normally choose, but it was still very peaceful and quiet.

Liked: Owners were fantastic. From arrival to leaving they couldn't have done more for us or other campers. They stopped to talk, communicated any thing they thought we needed to know. Spotless amenities Nice rugby club house who was very welcoming. All in all a great place to stay.

Disliked: Nothing

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Everything was awesome! Beautifully maintained pitches, grass wasn't unevenly, beautifully green, no parts bogged out with water. Plus there is plenty of space between pitches. Lots of signs to know where to go. Very friendly & accommodating staff. Toilets & bathroom were CLEAN !! The heat to the showers came through almost instantly. Something little but made such a difference to me - the amount of hooks in the bathroom shower area. It's great to see they've gone the extra mile to put extra hooks up for clothes and/or towels, not to be flung over the door or placed on a wet floor! Facilities to wash & dry clothes if needed, for a small cost. Lots of brochures of things to do, as a couple and as a family. Shared fridge & freezer if you need it. At night, the views of the stars are beautiful !! Local town with co op nearby for shopping.

Disliked: The only thing I can say is; my husband prefers an on/off switch with continuous water running. The venue has a push button with a timer with flowing water, which shuts off after a few seconds.

Local attractions

Wales is quite the adventure hub – if you want to get in on some of the action, try the Raven mountain biking trail at Brechfa Forest 35 minutes’ drive away from the park. Quieter times can be had at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (about 40 minutes away), to check out the world's biggest single-span glasshouse, or while birdwatching at the RSPB Gwenffrwd-dinas. Or learn about the country's past at the Roman-era Dolaucothi Gold Mine where you can pan for precious minerals and tour the site (20 minutes’ drive). The hides at the latter centre are up near stunning Llyn Brianne Dam & Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive from the site): follow up sightings of red kites et al with a trip to see the water rushing down the spillway when the reservoir is full.
