  • Peaceful site with sea views, 15 minutes from Carmarthen Bay
  • A 10-minute walk from a beach and a village pub
  • Half a mile from trains to the Gower Peninsula and Cardiff
You can see the sea from Ferryside Farm Caravan Park and Campsite. Within a 15-minute drive of this peaceful south Wales getaway, there are beaches which are famed over the world. The full seven sandy miles of secluded and silky Cefn Sidan, for example, as well as stunning Amroth Bay, and the sands and surf of Rhossili, regularly voted as one of the best beaches on the planet. For families, this spot is splendid for days of rockpooling and crabbing; theme parks and similar are further away, around a 40-minute drive or so. Ferryside beach is 10 minutes’ walk away (for the former activities), as are a village pub and a couple of eateries. A kids' play area is five minutes' walk away behind the rugby club. Kidwelly, the nearest village after Ferryside, has another pub, Indian and Chinese takeaways, an off-licence and a newsagents. Keep the car or take the train: Ferryside is only a few miles off the A484 between Carmarthen and Kidwelly with quick access to both towns as well as Swansea and Llanelli, and half a mile from Ferryside rail station where you can steam ahead to the Gower Peninsula, Milford Haven, Tenby, Pembrokeshire and Cardiff or on to Crewe, London and Manchester. Facilities at Ferryside include a shower and toilet block. Guests can pick their own pitches, and dog guests are welcome too. Please note this is a quiet, peaceful site: no radios/music are to be played after 10pm and if you wish to party this isn't the site for you.

Liked: The scenery was beautiful as we were looking out over the estuary. The owner Phil was very friendly and helpful. This site is very quiet and peaceful.

Disliked: There was no local shop but they are in the middle of building one and should be ready by October.

Liked: Loved the position of the site, a short stroll to the estuary and village. Hearing the curlew call and watching the house martins and bats was magical. A bird lovers paradise. Great location for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. The facilities are fine if a bit tired. The site was peaceful with good facilities and Phil the owner, is warm, friendly and super helpful.

Liked: The View, The Welcome, The toilet Block. A 20 min walk into town and the railway station. Still has a working signal Box. You cannot imagine my excitement about that. Phil the owner could not be more helpful. Always on hand and ready with any information you might need. Just hope the shop in town will be finished next time we stay.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site (sea view, adults only)

Liked: A good site with tents on top of a hill with excellent views across the River Towey estuary. Toilets and showers were clean. Phil, the site manager, was very friendly and helpful. Giving good local information including a pub 2 stops down the railway line selling beer for £2.50/pint. The site was half a mile from the station and a 20 min drive to shops in Carmarthen.

Disliked: SW wind.

Liked: Lovely site, owner Phillip was very welcoming, knowledgeable on local area and what activities we could do, which appealed to our group of 6 adults and 3 children. Very clean facilities.

Disliked: Having to pay for the showers, although Phillip did give each group a £’s worth of 20p’s.

Liked: Lovely position with partial views of the estuary. We were on the lower part of the field in a motor home on a lovely big pitch with hookup. We needed some levelling as on grass. You can walk to the beach which is dog friendly. The village has a coffee shop, pub, cafe and Hotel, all within walking distance. Don’t miss a trip on the unique little ferry. Philip and his team were very welcoming and helpful.

Disliked: Nothing really. There’s only a few hard standing pitches as the rest are seasonal Pitches. Access into the field in a larger motor home was tight but doable.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site (sea view, adults only)

Liked: From the moment we arrived until we left our experience was amazing. Our camping site was located at the top of a hill overlooking the bay. The view was spectacular and if you want a beautiful sunset, that is the place to be. Phillip checked in on us every day giving us local destinations to visit and explore. Close to the train, a little ferry that took you over across the bay, a pub and attractions. The bathrooms were spotless and the showers were hot. There was a big sink centrally located if you needed to do your washing up. Would deffo go back again soon. Thank you.

Disliked: No shop in the village but there is one coming we hear.

Route directions

By car: On approaching the first roundabout in Carmarthen turn left onto the A484 for Kidwelly. After about 500 metres you will pass Morrisons on the left-hand side. Go through the village of Idole (careful - there is a speed camera!) and continue for another three miles passing the Star Forge Garage on the right. A mile down a hill, take the turning for Ferryside located on the right-hand side (opposite the turning for Llandyfaelog). As you're approaching the village, turn right immediately before the humpback bridge. Ferryside Farm is the first property on the right. By train: From London, Bristol, Cardiff, or Swansea: the village of Ferryside can be reached via Arriva and First Great Western. Please check times before travelling. On arrival head down through the village passing the school on your right. After about 1.5 miles you will cross over a humpback bridge where the property can be accessed turning left into a no through road and then right into the driveway.

Local attractions

Naturally, the beaches – and the castles – are first: a paddle on Ferryside beach gives you a chance to see 12th-century Llansteffan Castle, on the other side of the Towy Estuary. It’s not much of a surprise to find out that this perch has been protected since at least Iron Age times – there was once an Iron Age fort here built by savvy ancestors protecting their section of bay from invaders. If you want to pop over for a look (as you should), it's a half-hour drive to get there. A fine collection of other castles are in the vicinity – it is Wales after all: 12th-century Kidwelly Castle and 11th-century Carmarthen Castle are the closest, but Laugharne is within 17 miles, Oystermouth 27, Newcastle Emlyn 28 and Carew 36. Once (or before) the castles are conquered, Carmarthen Bay, the Gower Peninsula and neighbouring Pembrokeshire have so many award-winning beaches you are hereby challenged to get around them in one trip. If you then fancy something inland, get to Colby Woods and Gardens or Pembrey Country Park, which has a dry ski slope, wildlife trails, horse riding and the longest toboggan run in Wales. Two types of racing are within 15 minutes of Ferryside: motor at Pembrey Racing Circuit and horse at Ffos Las Racecourse.
