Camping field

  • Wild camping field surrounded by woodland between Usk and Pontypool
  • A 20-minute drive to Raglan Castle, and 40 minutes to Tintern Abbey
  • A 10-minute walk to Llandegfedd Reservoir for watersports and fishing
A small and dog-friendly pop-up site in Monmouthshire countryside near Pontypool, Cwmsoar Camping has well-maintained, spacious field and orchard pitches on a working farm surrounded by ancient woodlands. Quiet and rural it might be, but it’s also close to the lovely old village of Usk (10 minutes’ drive), with its fab – and handy – selection of pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered. As this is wild camping, facilities are few – mains water, portable toilets and a toilet-emptying station. For those going down the self-catering route on their break, barbecues and firepits are allowed on site and you can pick up goodies in Usk’s convenience stores too. Alternatively, you can try your luck in New Inn, a mile away, which has shops and places to eat. This peaceful spot is within easy distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir (10 minutes’ walk), where you can soon be out on the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing adventures. Not brought your gear? No worries, simply hire boards and boats from Llandegfedd Visitor & Watersports Centre (10 minutes’ drive). For more sedate pleasures, the lake is a hopping place for fly fishing for trout from the bankside, and you can follow a circular walk along the water’s edge through quiet woodland or enjoy a short stroll with the kids through fields.

What customers say

This cosy, quiet spot's a ripper for nature buffs and walkers in a gorgeous country setting. Reviewers rave about the super friendly owners, the spotless site and loos, and the chill vibe. Basic facilities but guests love the simplicity. Mind the narrow access roads. Some say it’s a bit steep for what’s on offer, but most reckon it’s great value for the peace.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The camping field was well maintained , quiet, relaxing & the owners are friendly.
Ideal for tents, camper vans or roof tents. Grass pitches. Choose your place. Surrounded by trees & hedges. Lots of bird song. Walks nearby with a path to the reservoir.
Dog friendly.
No signal on 02 so ideal for those that want a phone free stay.
Portaloos (clean) & an outside tap are on site.
Would highly recommend for those that appreciate natural camping.

Disliked That I didn't have time to stay longer 😁

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Great location, very peaceful and quiet, away from main busy road. Almost in the middle of nowhere. Great place to switch off and enjoy the nature. Great walks nearby too. I would recommend getting there via Jerusalem Ln, due to narrow widey road. Met the host lovely Lady.

Disliked Things to take in mind, you will not get any signal on site, (there is if you go out for a walk.) Only two portaloo might be an issue when it at peak time. Its not level in some places. Pricy.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Location and set up where great - very posh for a wildcamp. We really appreciated the communications we had with Sue before our arrival, and Henry's relaxed welcome.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked I did like the basic style.
I did see toilets and a water tap available but I didn't need these.
The site was easy to find and was quite peaceful.

Disliked Unfortunately the site is quite a sloop so this made it difficult to find a good pitch. I ended up pitching sideways.
Also my car got a bit stuck on the grass which really stressed me out.
I did find the site quite expensive.

Local attractions

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.
