  • Small, wild site surrounded by woodland between Usk and Pontypool
  • A 20-minute drive to Raglan Castle, and 40 minutes to Tintern Abbey
  • Watersports and fishing at Llandegfedd Reservoir 20 minutes' walk
A small and nature-oriented site in Monmouthshire countryside near Pontypool, Cwmsoar Camping has basic but spacious field and orchard pitches on a working farm surrounded by ancient woodlands. Quiet and rural it might be, but it’s also close to the lovely old village of Usk (10 minutes’ drive), with its fab – and handy – selection of pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered. As this is a wild site, facilities are few – mains water, portable toilets and a toilet-emptying station. For those going down the self-catering route on their break, barbecues and firepits are allowed on site and you can pick up goodies in Usk’s convenience stores too. Alternatively, you can try your luck in New Inn, a mile away, which has shops and places to eat. This peaceful dog-friendly spot is within easy distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir (a 15- to 20-minute woodland walk), where you can soon be out on the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing adventures. Not brought your gear? No worries, simply hire boards and boats from Llandegfedd Visitor & Watersports Centre (10 minutes’ drive). For more sedate pleasures, the lake is a hopping place for fly fishing for trout from the bankside, and you can follow a circular walk along the water’s edge through quiet woodland or enjoy a short stroll with the kids through fields.

What customers say

A chill, no-frills spot in a ripper natural setting with lovely hosts. Basic but clean loos and a tap, fire pits for hire. Great for quiet walks, though some reckon it's a bit steep for what's on offer. Cracking for a low-key nature escape.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely location, quiet and pretty field. Drinking water was handy too! Owner seemed lovely when she came over to say hello after we’d set up. We happened to be the only ones there until our last night which was a lovely bonus! Portaloos were cleaned daily

Disliked I do however think it’s overpriced for what it is. I normally find sites without showers are normally about half the price but the main thing for me was that there’s no bins to leave rubbish. I think for the price paid to then not even be able to leave rubbish is a bit of a pain. Portaloos we’re very clean however right on top of each other which became a bit uncomfortable when the site got busier on our last night.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked It was quiet and peaceful. We had the campsite to ourselves for two out of the three nights, pitches were a decent size and the portaloos were cleaned regularly. The owners came over and introduced themselves and seemed very nice.

Disliked Only two portaloos available and are right next to each other which wasn’t so nice when the campsite got busier on the third night. Seemed over price for such basic facilities and never been to a campsite that doesn’t provide bins and you are expected to take your rubbish home.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked No frills, but it was exactly what we wanted. Beautiful site, quiet and peaceful. Toilets were basic, but well kept and clean. Easy access for us to visit family. We would definitely consider using again.

Disliked Road to get there was a little tight in a van, but nothing that can be done about that! It meant we were out of the way of too much traffic, so not to bad!

From the manager: Dear Nicola
Sorry to see your very negative account of a visit to Cwmsoar. I dont recall meeting you at checkin, I might have been able to offer support.

I note the booking was for 15th August, the weekend of receiveing; The National Emergency Alert 🔥 from government, for extreme risk of fires due to the hot weather.

There are several mountain fires burning within 10-15 miles of Cwmsoar. We have experienced minimal issues with smoke on site, this can be changeable with wind direction and the development of new fires.

We are closely monitoring local warnings, the site for smoke and the safety of our clients.

There is a temporary ban on site, in line with goverment guidance.
No open fires
No BBQ,s
No open ignition activities.
We encourage visitors to act responsibly during this hot dry spell, and to discard any cigarettes or similar safely.

A lovely place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The owners are a stones throw away & super friendly, they even offered us air beds (which we massively regret turning down)
We thought that our roll mats & duvets would provide enough comfort for our broken & aging bodies 😅 how naive!!!

After assembling the tent together we made friends with the adorable farm dogs, got ourselves comfy and watched the sky turn to night. There were no bbqs or fires allowed due to the severe dry weather and wildfires we have been experiencing locally but we were permitted to use our gas stove off the ground fully supervised to make cuppas and food.

We had a little go at tarot in the dark, enjoyed watching a pair of bats dance above us for a while and of course we star gazed into the early hours of the morning - we saw some truly astonishing things in the sky! Unexplainable things!

At some point around 5am there were clearly wild animals most likely hedgehogs and possibly badgers or foxes moving around in the hedges and sniffing around the tent.
Sleep was very poor but the memories created were worth it.
Waking to the sunshine, the breeze, the birds singing, sitting on the grass making a cuppa was food for the soul.

On site has 2 portaloos (quite smelly ... take air freshener and just be grateful its not a bush)
Drinking water tap! This was a blessing.
Fire extinguisher and buckets incase of emergency.
There are apple trees, not for eating but there is something wholesome about being around trees and hedges growing food.

We would 100% return
What will we do next time? Air beds! Poss a bigger tent, air freshener, bug spray we didn't get bitten but we attracted a lot of bugs from the light.
Signal is poor but I still managed to get some.

Happy camping! ✨️🏕🦇☕️

Disliked The toilet smell. But, it is a very hot summer and we were grateful for loos

We never really braved venturing out of the campsite to explore as we weren't sure how to find the woodland without using the country road. But then we didn't ask either, it didn't hinder our fun though.

Liked Nice and quiet.

Disliked Lack of bins. No Showers. Too steep a gradient on one side of the field to pitch tents. Would not be viable if busy.

Local attractions

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.
