Pitches

  • Peaceful site for families, couples and relaxed sorts
  • Well-priced café serving breakfasts, cream teas and off-licence sales
  • A 10-minute walk from Monknash beach
Sites with coast views, campfires allowed, a short stroll from the beach and an even shorter one to an award-winning pub should always get your holiday vote… add in an acclaimed café on site and a pub a couple of minutes' stroll down the road, and you'll likely hail Heritage Coast Campsite as a winner. Based in Glamorgan's Cowbridge and 10 minutes' walk from Monknash beach across public footpaths, the much-liked Heritage Coast comes with the Monks Rest Café, a recent venture from Phillipa, Glynn and team that dishes up breakfasts in the type of belly-busting size of which you might thoroughly approve. Cream teas, Friday night suppers, off-licence sales and properly-sized coffees/hot drinks are also on offer, all are at reasonable prices – and the café is quite arty and information-based too, with an art/photography gallery and heaps of leaflets and tourist info about the local area. Amenities include ladies' and gents' blocks each with two toilets, two showers, two sinks and a hand dryer, plus a hairdryer in the ladies'. Disabled bathroom facilities, a utility room with two basins (and hot water) and a freezer are also on site. Campfires are allowed if you want to sort your own nosh – ask Glyn or Philippa about hiring a fire basket – or you could have a meal at the award-winning Plough and Harrow pub two minutes' walk away where there's also live music on Saturday evenings. Whichever you decide, take time for sitting back as dusk falls to listen out for the hooting of the local owls: Heritage Coast Campsite is in a wildlife haven too...

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Loved it here, so nice to be in the middle of the country with a nice walk to the beach, through woodland. Nice little site, all pitch’s were on level ground. Very friendly. Nice and clean. Good food and drinks by the log burner. Also good to be able to rent a fire pit. Nice little pub around the corner, also lovely food and a great atmosphere.

Disliked: Unfortunately the club house wasn’t open for food/drink on the Sunday evening. It was wet and windy so would have been a nice option.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Loved how short the grass was as it helped the moisture evaporate so we could pack up our dry tents. Great recycling system as a gentlemen was driving around every morning and picking all the rubish. Loved the fire pits provided as it was easy to cook on one side with coal while still having a fire on the other side. Dog friendly campsite and all the people we met were friendly including the people who ran the place as they were so friendly and helpful. This is the second we are camping and I am sure we will come back many times. Btw the beach is incredible! And the nice walk from the campsite is just enjoyable as beautiful surroundings

Disliked: Some people did not hold their dogs on the lead which made it a bit enjoying as their dogs kept on coming to our pitch upsetting our dog . But to be faire to the campsite management whenever we mentioned this to staff they have requested to put the dogs on the lead. And it was the guests choice to ignore the request. I appreciate it is not a campsite fault.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Glad you enjoyed the site and local area. We are as you say a dog friendly site, however it is a rule that all dogs are kept on a lead at all times, unfortunately occasionally sone campers choose to ignore the policy, it is fair to say in the main we do not have this problem, people care for their dogs and consideration for others. Hope to see you again.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: The campsite had everything we needed, from a cafe/bar onsite to clean toilets and showers. The staff were all super friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy having guests. Also just a quick walk from a stunning beach, it was such a hidden treasure, from amazing rock sculptures to smooth sands, and not busy at all, it was almost like a private beach!

Disliked: My only gripe is sadly the one thing that can't be changed, the bottom field (tent field) was really windy due to being so open. However a few wind breaks was enough to hold off enough wind to enjoy the warmth of the firepit in the evenings!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, unfortunately coastal sites do tend to get windy days, glad you managed to enjoy the evening with the fire pit.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Even though the weather was wet, wild and windy in Wales during my stay, Philipa, her hubby and staff made everyone feel so welcome! Nothing was too much trouble and they have created a home from home atmosphere! Although the toilet and shower blocks were minimal for the amount of campers, there were no queues for the use of these facilities which were extremely clean. The site was perfectly located for the beach and coastal walks! I will definitely be returning ☺️

Local attractions

Coastal walks, beaches, museums, castles and outdoor activities are all around to get stuck into. If you want to stick to the coast – it's a heritage one after all – try out one of the local surf schools or some fishing nearby at Penarth Beach or Wick. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast runs for 14 miles from Porthcawl to Aberthawl and has some highly scenic walks as well as even more scenic horse rides to be had on its beaches. Ogmore Castle and Fonmon Castle are two nearby sites to sort some Welsh history (as is the excellent St Fagans National History Museum a short drive away in Cardiff), and the National Trust's Dyffryn Gardens will be a good day out for green-fingered types. Also nearby, look for the local karting centre, Taskforce Skirmish Paintball and a few rounds of Welsh golf; have a look through the Heritage Coast Campsite info leaflets to get you started.
