  • Rural adults-only site five minutes’ drive from Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
  • A 15-minute drive to Llangollen and Chirk; Offa’s Dyke Path two miles
  • Dog-friendly location with discounted access to secure dog fields
You might have a hard time tearing yourself away from this peaceful countryside site surrounded by green hills and open spaces. At least, that's until you hear that Plas Issa Farm is also only a five-minute drive from the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It may be based on an off-grid working farm, but this adults-only site is well within reach of spectacular North Wales sights… Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is an obvious first choice, with its spectacular stone and cast-iron structure with 18 arches; get yourself onboard a narrowboat from Llangollen Wharf. Nearby Llangollen (15 minutes' drive) also has a steam railway and countless adorable cafés. Plas Issa Farm is between the villages of Penycae and Acrefair, a 15-minute drive from Wrexham and Chirk, and within a short drive of the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape. There are plenty of walks in the immediate area that guests can get out onto, including a public footpath from the farm itself and the Offa’s Dyke Path around two miles away. Adventures aside, it should be easy to embrace a slower pace on site. Firepits (bring your own off-ground firepit or hire one upon arrival) are welcome in most areas – good news for those who want to try stargazing – and there’s plenty of space to unwind around the large paddocks. Well-behaved dogs are welcome; the site has discounted access to secure dog fields nearby. Facilities cover the basics, with bottled spring drinking water and eco soaps, washing-up liquids and shower gels left out for guests to use at the handwashing sink. The portable toilets (including a wheelchair-accessible one) are in the farm complex, along with a cold shower, hot wet-room-style shower (small donations are requested) and phone charging points. Portable chargers are available for an additional fee. Local pubs and shops are within a 10- to 20-minute walk and a larger supermarket is 10 minutes' drive away.

Barnside Meadow unpowered grass and earth tent site (large)

Liked Plenty of space and Dean takes a lot of time planning out pitches so every gets the right space. The hosts were so friendly with a lively welcome. The site itself is clean with beautiful views. Plenty of space for my dog.
As a solo female traveller I felt very safe.

Panoramic views unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Absolutely wonderful hosts, very focused on ensuring everyone was made to feel welcome on site. They took time to explain all the pitch options to ensure I had the one I preferred rather than directing me to a specific pitch. The facilities are basic, exactly as described, but with a choice of a hot and a cold shower, washing up area ( helpfully stocked with washing up liquid and sponges), and several portable loos ll of which are kept spotlessly clean there was nothing else I needed. And the best bit - the stunning view from the top field which, the weekend I stayed was bursting with buttercups. The hosts mowed individual camp pitches around the perimiter of the top field which ensured we all had loads of space. It was BLISSFUL 😊 There are footpaths running directly from the top field so perfect for me - 18 miles on day one, 15 the next.

Disliked That I couldn't stay longer.

Barnside power optional concrete and grass campervan or tent site

Liked Wow, what can we say. Dean was so accommodating and tried to ensure the stay was as good as it could be.
The site was lovely, amazing views, and the portaloo/ shower facilities were spotless, considering the heat I don’t know how it was achieved. We will most definiately be back as soon as possible.

Disliked Nothing - it was fantastic - the only dislike was going home!

Panoramic views unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Dean was a great host at Plas Issa. We had the whole top field to ourselves with some wonderful views out over the countryside and plenty of space for our dog to run around.

Good access to public footpaths and a couple of mile walk down into the local towns with plenty of pubs and restaurants to visit.

Chestnut Bank unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Peace and quiet - only the birds to listen to! Really clean basic facilities. Dean was so helpful, letting us choose our pitch. The hot shower was fabulous and towels provided too. Portaloos really clean. We had everything we needed for our 3 night stay and will definitely return for another semi-wild camp. Also loved the option to hire fire pit and enjoyed snuggles with Teddy the farm cat !!

Panoramic views unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Stayed at Plas Issa Farm recently and it was a cracking spot. We upgraded to one of the larger pitches and the space was unreal — loads of room and proper 270° views all around, felt really private and open at the same time. The dog loved it.

The pitch felt nicely tucked away so you’ve got that remote, peaceful vibe, but you’re still close enough to the facilities that it’s not a trek when you need them. Didn’t really use the facilities ourselves, but they looked clean and well kept from what we saw.

Also took a walk (around 45mins) over to the nearby aqueduct which was a nice bonus — makes the location even better having something like that on your doorstep.

Would definitely stay again 👍

Local attractions

Don’t be too surprised if you keep on returning to Llangollen (15 minutes’ drive). As well as being the departure point for narrowboat rides along the Llangollen Canal, it has a steam railway heritage line and the Plas Newydd Historic House & Gardens, a 14th-century Victorian country house remodelled in the 1930s. Set on a hilltop above Llangollen, Castell Dinas Brân (15 minutes) is another reason to keep returning. The medieval castle has quite the scenery, but first, you’ll need to walk uphill from Llangollen. Treat it as your warm-up for a bigger hike at World’s End (half an hour). Chirk has another stunning aqueduct, the Chirk Aqueduct & Viaduct (15 minutes). Chirk Castle (15 minutes), managed by the National Trust, is also in the area; its 480 acres of working parkland, 13th-century Marcher castle and café should easily occupy you for a morning.
