  • Rural adults-only site five minutes’ drive from Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
  • A 15-minute drive to Llangollen and Chirk; Offa’s Dyke Path two miles
  • Dog-friendly location with discounted access to secure dog fields
You might have a hard time tearing yourself away from this peaceful countryside site surrounded by green hills and open spaces. At least, that's until you hear that Plas Issa Farm is also only a five-minute drive from the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It may be based on an off-grid working farm, but this adults-only site is well within reach of spectacular North Wales sights… Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is an obvious first choice, with its spectacular stone and cast-iron structure with 18 arches; get yourself onboard a narrowboat from Llangollen Wharf. Nearby Llangollen (15 minutes' drive) also has a steam railway and countless adorable cafés. Plas Issa Farm is between the villages of Penycae and Acrefair, a 15-minute drive from Wrexham and Chirk, and within a short drive of the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape. There are plenty of walks in the immediate area that guests can get out onto, including a public footpath from the farm itself and the Offa’s Dyke Path around two miles away. Adventures aside, it should be easy to embrace a slower pace on site. Firepits (bring your own off-ground firepit or hire one upon arrival) are welcome in most areas – good news for those who want to try stargazing – and there’s plenty of space to unwind around the large paddocks. Well-behaved dogs are welcome; the site has discounted access to secure dog fields nearby. Facilities cover the basics, with bottled spring drinking water and eco soaps, washing-up liquids and shower gels left out for guests to use at the handwashing sink. The portable toilets (including a wheelchair-accessible one) are in the farm complex, along with a hot wet-room-style shower (small donations are requested) and phone charging points. Portable chargers are available for an additional fee. Local pubs and shops are within a 10- to 20-minute walk and a larger supermarket is 10 minutes' drive away.

Farm Side unpowered grass and earth campervan or tent site (large)

Liked A beautiful camp site! This is a relaxing campsite with amazing views. The host was really welcoming and friendly and helped us with everything we needed! Even a little cute cat to top things off!
We stopped in our little camper and had views over the fields and blue skies. We had a great trip and would definitely stay again!

Farm Side unpowered grass and earth campervan or tent site (large)

Liked Very quiet, beautiful views, lots of space. Very helpful owner. Very welcoming.

Disliked Basic facilities, but we were aware of that when booked and the price reflects this. What is there is well looked after.

Farm Side unpowered grass and earth campervan or tent site (large)

Liked Easy access from main road, well-signposted, and in an absolutely beautiful area! My friend and I booked on for a quick getaway in one of the grass pitches and realised the day before that we were due to be camping through a storm!

We decided to give it a go despite the forecast of high winds and Dean offered a truly warm welcome as soon as we arrived. I expressed concern about camping in the wind and instead of strictly guiding us to the pitch we booked, he allowed us to camp on one of the EHU barn side pitches which offered us a lot more shelter. Enough shelter that we managed to have a campfire during 35mph+ winds!

I have to say that the true highlight of this campsite was the friendly farm cat, Teddy who was our constant companion around the wash room area.

Chestnut Bank unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Dean the host is very welcoming and helpful. The facilities are basic but are as described and are all very clean and in good working order. The pitches on Chestnut Bank are spacious (I didn't see the other part of the site) with easy access to the facilities.

I really enjoyed my stay and hope to visit again.

Chestnut Bank unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Lovely short stay here. Great facilities and welcoming owner. Also, the loveliest cat, Teddy, lives here and he loves a good cuddle! Be careful though, he might not want to leave you; we spent the morning with this lovely cat, he sat on our laps and kept us company for breakfast. Was sad to leave him!

Unpowered grass and earth tent site (large, secluded)

Liked The rustic feel and simplicity of the place. We had a lovely weekend just the place to relax and unwind. Loved the hot shower in the outbuilding no more being cramped in a shower cubicle it was massive no more coming out feeling sweaty like you need another shower. We had a lovely walk around the various fields and other camping areas available in the early evening which was lovely there’s a serenity to this place that has to be felt to understand just makes you forget everything and just breathe. We will most definitely be back soon😊

Farm Side power optional concrete and grass campervan or tent site

Liked Beautiful peaceful venue! Very clean and lovely views. Ongoing work to improve the site which is always a plus! Enthusiastic owner and lovely guy! Weather was bad upon arrival but he made everything possible, possible! I will visit again

Disliked Not a dislike but if you want electric you need to be close to the farm buildings. However, speaking to the owner it’s a work in progress.

Local attractions

Don’t be too surprised if you keep on returning to Llangollen (15 minutes’ drive). As well as being the departure point for narrowboat rides along the Llangollen Canal, it has a steam railway heritage line and the Plas Newydd Historic House & Gardens, a 14th-century Victorian country house remodelled in the 1930s. Set on a hilltop above Llangollen, Castell Dinas Brân (15 minutes) is another reason to keep returning. The medieval castle has quite the scenery, but first, you’ll need to walk uphill from Llangollen. Treat it as your warm-up for a bigger hike at World’s End (half an hour). Chirk has another stunning aqueduct, the Chirk Aqueduct & Viaduct (15 minutes). Chirk Castle (15 minutes), managed by the National Trust, is also in the area; its 480 acres of working parkland, 13th-century Marcher castle and café should easily occupy you for a morning.
