James Caravan Park: Entrance

General

  • Well-maintained rural site with pitches surrounded by trees
  • On the edge of Ruabon; Llangollen 15 minutes' drive
  • Dedicated dog-walking area; half a mile to pubs and a railway station

Set yourself up for leisurely North Wales breaks at James Caravan Park, a well-maintained site on the edge of the small town of Ruabon. There's a range of styles of pitches here, from grass-based basic options to hard-standing fully-serviced plots, plus a host of handy amenities like a centrally-heated toilet and shower block and a dedicated dog-walking area.

The park grounds are spacious, green and dotted with trees. With so much room, your nearest neighbours are likely to be the various forms of local wildlife that flit between the branches (although when you're feeling more sociable it's an easy half-mile walk to the nearest pub).

The park is a 15-minute drive from the gorgeous town of Llangollen, the base of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests with an adventurous side have all sorts of activities to try out here, from river rafting to boating, trail riding and more.

Larger towns and cities like Wrexham (10 minutes' drive), Chester (30 minutes) and Liverpool (50 minutes) are also well within reach for urban day trips. The nearest station is under 15 minutes' away on foot, making it easy to catch the train to Chester (journey time 20 minutes) or Shrewsbury (30 minutes) too.

Please note

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site was immaculate, the staff were friendly, the shower was fabulous and the location was perfect, with an Aldi
supermarket and Subway a 7 minute stroll away. I was nervous about booking this site because of the bad reviews about road noise . Yes you could hear cars but I didn’t need ear plugs so don’t let the bad reviews put you off. It was excellent value for money.

The shower, and its 15min walk from train station

    Disliked:

Location, atmosphere, description is way off the reality.
Sandwiched between a massive fuel station complex, a busy main road and roundabout, the traffic noise was pretty bad. Didn't feel safe, the police were there one night but not sure why. Rhiwabon/Ruabon is an odd place, definitely not a rural village, more of a run down town. 100% not somewhere to spend your daytimes, more of a cheap stop over.

We've been a couple of times and would always come back.
The staff are so friendly, the lady called us as we were running late and she catered for us a family with a little 3 year old, she placed us in a quiet spot, she was just so lovely, such a pleasant lady. The site is so peaceful and clean, and you can hire a firepit for 5 pounds for the night, it's a reasonable price too to stay. And we like to drive to llangollen which is about a 15 minute drive.

Local attractions

Hoping for history? You've come to the right place. Take a trip to Chirk Castle (10 minutes' drive) and discover one of the most impressive Marcher fortresses on the border between England and Wales. Afterwards, similarly scenic and historic times are to be had at the National Trust-run Erddig Estate (15 minutes), a spectacular Grade I-listed property with fab formal grounds.

Water has done such a lot to shape the Welsh landscape, and the area surrounding James Caravan Park has a fair bit of the wet stuff to admire. Check out the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes) on the Shropshire Union Canal to see an exceptional feat of Victorian engineering, and stick around to take a boat ride by its arches along the river Dee.

For a break with one foot in Wales and the other in England, trundle along by train to Chester Zoo (or drive there in 30 minutes), take yourself off to Tate Liverpool (50 minutes) for art and culture, or – if you really want to make the kids' day – organise a jaunt to the high-adrenaline rides at Gulliver's World Theme Park (50 minutes).

Must see

  • Chester Castle (24.7 kilometres)
  • Cheshire Military Museum (24.8 kilometres)
  • Chester Cathedral (25.4 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Chirk Castle (6.2 kilometres)
