No tent is too small or too big

  • Quiet pitches at a wildlife-rich Anglesey farm a mile from the coast
  • Easy access to Anglesey Coast Path; 25 minutes' drive to Holyhead
  • Dark skies area with great stargazing; communal firepit on site
Sleeping under the stars? This is the place for it – there’s such a dearth of light pollution around Caerau Campsite, in Anglesey’s ‘dark belt’, that it’s often possible to spot satellites and shooting stars overhead. On particularly clear nights you can even see the Milky Way from here… There’s rather more to this site than just its after-dark attractions, though: this peaceful farm site is in a rural location about a mile away from the coastline, with easy access to the Anglesey Coast Path for seaside strolls. The beaches of Cemlyn, Church Bay and Cemaes Bay are all within a few minutes’ drive too, and it’s about 25 minutes to Holyhead if you need a bigger town (or a ferry to Ireland). And there’s often a lot to see on site as well: this is something of a wildlife haven, with a small private lake that often attracts all sorts of wildlife. Keep an eye out for the resident moorhen, herons, kingfishers, ducks and geese around the place; you might also get to spot foxes, stoats and bigger birds like buzzards, partridges and pheasants. By night, your stargazing is likely to be accompanied by the sound of owls and the odd bat or two out foraging. Facilities on site include a toilet block, showers, a washing-up area and a small food shop. There’s also a splendid communal firepit where you can gather to warm your hands as the sun goes down (though you’re also allowed to light up your own barbecue if you need a place to cook).

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay here. The owner was really forthcoming and friendly and left us to it. The views were spectacular, especially at night when the clouds cleared and we could see the stars and even a few constellations and shooting stars. The showers were clean and a really nice bonus to the camping experience, and the toilets were also well-kept and clean (I saw a hedgehog in the women’s bathroom so be mindful.) I loved that there was a washing up station too. A lovely town is just a 10 minute drive away for fish & chips or essentials.

Disliked: The grass was quite long, as was expected for this time of year, but our shoes were constantly wet going into the tent. The park wasn’t suitable for younger children. There was nothing safe for my 16 month old. The major issue were the wasps. I don’t know if we were just near a nest but they were very aggressive and stopped us from sitting outside. We had to keep our tent closed most of the time.

Liked: Large fields & free choice of pitch, quiet mid-week.

Disliked: Facilities not cleaned very often. 2 showers only, insufficient for size of site. Noisy at weekend with other people disregarding the 11pm quiet time - music still playing at 2a.m. No staff intervention to remind others of campsite rules. Over-priced for the basic facilities.

Liked: The campsite was in a lovely location and you felt one with nature on the dry days. Shop and cafe seemed well stocked.

Disliked: The toilets weren't cleaned often enough and the showers were very rugged!! On a cold wet day all you want is a nice warm clean shower but these were a concrete floored lean too with a weak showerhead. You've got a lovely location, sort these and the showers out and you'll be great!

Local attractions

There are so many gorgeous coastal spots around Anglesey that it can be tricky to know where to start, but you’ll be in a fabulous location to get out and see lots of them from Caerau Campsite. For starters, Cemlyn beach, Cemaes Bay and Church Bay are all within a 10-minute drive… Once you’ve explored that little lot, drive a bit further for trips to the abandoned brickworks at Porth Wen (15 minutes’ drive), sandy Trearddur Bay (25 minutes) or the stunning setting of South Stack Lighthouse (35 minutes). Even more far-flung spots aren’t too hard to get to from here – for example, Rhosneigr is a half-hour drive away and Newborough is 45 minutes away for a walk to Ynys Llanddwyn. Fancy taking in a bit of the island’s history as you tour? Stop by at Swtan Heritage Museum (10 minutes), take a walk along the colourful trails through the old copper mine at Parys Mountain (half an hour) or explore unfinished Beaumaris Castle (45 minutes).
