  • Shepherd’s hut in a smallholding garden near Amlwch on Anglesey
  • Half an hour’s drive to Beaumaris, and 40 minutes to Caernarfon Castle
  • Breakfast provided; separate shower; firepit and pizza oven outside
After a cosy space to bunk down with your beloved on the Isle of Anglesey? Carreg Wen Shepherd Hut is a cute little glamping complex tucked away on a quiet smallholding near Amlwch, with just the right amount of room for two. Best of all, there’s no need to worry about breakfast, as it comes as part of the package. Yes, you can sleep soundly in the king-size bed and wake up to toast and cereal delivered right to your door, so brew up a cuppa and settle down at the table to begin your day in a very civilised manner. Next to the shepherd’s hut is an exclusive-use wooden shower room and loo. From the adjoining seating area, views are of open countryside, with sheep and lambs grazing peacefully in neighbouring fields. Going down the self-catering route? Outside on your private lawn, you’ll find a built-in firepit and pizza oven for creating alfresco feasts; if the weather turns against you, you can always retreat inside the hut and fire up the log burner to keep warm and cosy as you eat. Not into cooking? Head for Amlwch (five minutes’ drive) for your choice of takeaways and cafés.

Local attractions

One of the oldest copper mines in the world is found near Amlwch – learn more about the industry at the Copper Kingdom Centre (five minutes’ drive) before heading to Mynydd Parys (10 minutes) to see remains of a 17th-century smelting tower and an open-cast mine, thought to date back to the Bronze Age. Wanting more history? Anglesey is full of it, from the medieval castle at seaside Beaumaris to the elegant 15th-century mansion at Plas Newydd House and Garden (both half an hour), which has spectacular views across the Menai Straits to Snowdonia peaks from its waterside walks. And of course, you can also pop the Menai Bridge to the mainland and tour the imposing waterside fortresses at Caernarfon (40 minutes) and Conwy (50 minutes). You might prefer to stay firmly put on Anglesey to explore on foot; the island is circumnavigated by the 130-mile Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path, taking in extensive sandy beaches, soaring cliffs and water-blown sea arches along the way. If cycling is your favoured MO, try following the gentle Lon Las Cefni (20 minutes) route past marshes and through nature reserves.
