  • Small campsite on a working farm on the Llŷn Peninsula
  • Abersoch half an hour's drive; Portmeirion 35 minutes
  • Views over Gurn Ddu; well-behaved dogs welcome
Have yourself a holiday poking around castles, climbing Welsh hills and going for dips at local coves… the dog-friendly Penllechog Camping is located on a working beef and sheep farm at the base of Gurn Ddu on the spectacular Llŷn Peninsula. With a sheltered three-acre field as your base, here you’ll be surrounded by tall conifer trees and lots of typical Welsh greenery. Although this site is high up and a little over a mile from the nearest village, Penllechog Camping is in a conveniently central location… Trefor beach, for instance, can be reached by car in about 10 minutes, while Nefyn has two sandy beaches 20 minutes down the road. When your mind is set on a picnic or tasty breakfast bun, the local village of Llanaelhaearn has an award-winning bakery that bakes bread, cakes and savoury snacks daily. The site team are happy to take orders for you in advance so that there are freshly baked goodies waiting for you on your arrival. Back at base, facilities at Penllechog Camping include two hot showers, two eco toilets and a washing-up area. The site's water is supplied from natural springs at the foot of Gurn Ddu, the impressive hill you can see from site. Drinks can be kept cool in a shared fridge located in a barn, just a short distance from the main pitching field. Essentials like milk and newspapers can be picked up at a nearby garage (again, the owners are happy to take orders on your behalf in advance).

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The views. Clean toilets, shower block and washing area. Proximity to many great beaches. Large pitches. Lots of space. Remote yet accessible.

Disliked The slope on the pitch. Poor signage - a little difficult to find the site and where the on site fridge/freezer were located. Playground area had seen better days.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely peaceful site with stunning views. Very friendly welcome, free showers, very clean and well kept site. I shall definitely be going back.

Disliked The directions to find the site were a bit sketchy, the sign for the turn off was covered over by undergrowth so I missed the turning. It's a very narrow lane so not very easy to find somewhere to turn round. A quick call to the owner put me back on track.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked My two grown-up daughters and I--joined at the end by my wife--had a wonderful 10-day stay at Penllechog Camping. The site is located in a beautiful, mountainous area, very much in nature and away from the rough and tumble of city life. The facilities were as described and in good working order. The pitches were well-spaced apart. Linda, the host, was very attentive without being intrusive. There's a fridge and electric point if you need to keep anything cool or charge a small device. There's no wi-fi but there was good phone reception. We left feeling rejuvenated and as in love with North Wales as ever!

Local attractions

With mountains and a gorgeous fishing village as your backdrop, dips are pretty splendid at Trefor beach (10 minutes' drive)… but that’s not the only place on the coast that will be calling your name from Penllechog Camping. Pretty Portmeirion (35 minutes) has Italianate-style architecture, a spa and laidback strolls across the village, while Abersoch (30 minutes) is a sailing haven with boat trips to St Tudwal or coastal walks leading the way to further adventure. The sandy stretch in Nefyn is another rather attractive option. When you want some sort of adventure without delay, there’s direct access to a trail to Gurn Ddu (a hill with great views over the sea). Otherwise, sling a picnic in your bag and make off for a castle of your choosing: the coastal Criccieth Castle (25 minutes) or medieval Caernarfon Castle (30 minutes) perhaps? If it’s thrills you’re after, then GreenWood Family Park (40 minutes) or Zip World Slate Caverns (an hour) will fulfil those – the latter has huge zipwires or underground trampolines for a unique day out.
