  • Family-friendly smallholding in a rural location on the Llŷn Peninsula
  • Spectacular views towards the peak of Moelypenmaen
  • Lots of open space for kids to play
Get back to nature among spectacular surroundings with a stay at Gwynedd's Rhos Y Foel, in the middle of the Llŷn Peninsula a short drive from more lush landscapes at Snowdonia National Park. Set with views towards the rocky peak of Moelypenmaen, Rhos Y Foel is a small and family-friendly site, with a wide swathe of open space on which the kids can let loose. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Rhos Y Foel is a level and almost completely flat site – no uncomfy bumpy groundsheet nights here – and has a facilities block with hot running water. Off-ground barbecues are allowed and firepits are available on site: for supplies, the local village is Boduan and the shops and services of market town Pwllheli are a few miles away.

Liked: Martha was amazing,Location, pitch size, wood burners, walks. The campsite had everything we needed. A lovely family friendly holiday had by all.

Disliked: Maybe a few more showers? Although we didn’t have to wait when we went we did see a few campers sitting outside waiting on a few occasions.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: It's nice, clean, tidy, pitches signposted. Was busy and kids running around, but that's fine with me and it's the last week in August so waddya expect.

Disliked: They should do better signage to direct you to the entrance from the lane that has the grass growing in the middle of it. A little easy to get wrong. Honestly can't think of anything else to neg it with.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Absolutely loved this campsite! It had everything we needed and we stayed 6 nights. It is very small and very safe, very little vehicle movement. it is lovely and relaxed and we received a warm welcome with the offer of extra strong tent pegs if needed as there had been bad winds the night before. There are two fields, one for caravans and motorhomes and once for tents and campers. we were allocated a nice size pitch with EHU, we kept one car with us and there was a small car park where we left the other car. This car park could be seen from the tent and we walked through it/past it to get to the toilets and sinks. we were quite far down the field but only a short walk to the facilities, two cubicles in the females toilets and two cubicles in the male, and then two larger unisex toilets. there are only two showers, but in 6 days I only had to wait 10 mins once, the capacity of the campsite is such that we found it made little difference and the shower was incredible!! i only showered in number one but my partner showered in both and said although both were great, number one was superior! The campside was full of lovely little touches, such as a bottle of washing up liquid where the two washing up sinks were, these were next to two outdoor 'vanity' sinks for hand/face washing and teeth brushing and there were cute little sea side themed mirrors here too. there was a indoor room with washer and dryer for reasonable costs, coins needed. and a kettle and another sink and mirror set up. in this room there was a freezer to re-freeze ice blocks which was free to use. (i find normally you have to hire the campsites blocks and pay a deposit and a fee, or pay to use the freezer so was pleasantly surprised by this) the showers and toilets were thoroughly cleaned daily and always had toilet roll and night lighting. the staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. your pitch is allocated on arrival and then we were greeted as we were setting up and given a number to reach staff at any time for things we might need like extra tent pegs or a fire pit. we even got an apology for the one and a half rainy days which were to be expected as we were in wales! in august. and the apology was wholey unnecessary. Everything around the site was made clear with little posters, the use and cost of the washer and dryer for example, and the contact details of staff and rules expected to be followed for clear and polite. quiet time from 10 pm was well respected. The pitches were well looked after and help was on hand all the time, one family's camper was stuck in the mud and it was all hands on deck to get them out and they were assisted in moving their entire pitch a little further up the field. There were many families and our kids made loads of friends throughout the week, we absolutely loved this little gem of a place. absolutely incredible stars on the clear nights we got.

Disliked: there was very little to dislike. There could have been a little more lighting around the washing up sinks and vanity sinks, i did have to wash up quite late one evening and had to complete the task holding my torch in my mouth. There are motion sensor lights outside the bathrooms and lights on at all time within the bathrooms, but the light doesn't quite reach the sink area. There was a leaflet stand in the little indoor room with the washer and dryer, this could have been a little better stocked with local things to do.

Liked: Pitch - plenty of room per pitch, with power hook-up nearby. Grass, hedges, pathways etc all very well kept. Site Management - very good. 10pm "please be quiet" time, very helpful staff and regularly cleaned facilities. Facilities - Generally very good, toilets and showers all kept clean, wash up area clean and tidy.

Disliked: Only very minor niggle would be the need for a couple more showers as wait times were a bit of a nuisance, but this is not a complaint, more of a request of what could be better.

Local attractions

As you'll know if you've ever had the sense to go there, the Llŷn Peninsula is lovely land, with sea all around as it jabs 30 miles into the Irish Sea from north-west Wales's tip. Rhos Y Foel is in an excellent setting to get to the best of its hills and coast in the site surrounds, and to explore the mountains and other highlights of Snowdonia a short drive away. Around the peninsula, have seaside days at resorts like Abersoch, Nefyn, Morfa Nefyn and Pwllheli, all just a few miles away, or get active with afternoons among the wakeboarding, bowling, quad biking, go karting and fishing of Glasfryn Parc nearby at Pwllheli; soft play, food, a farm shop and a bar are at this latter as well. Paintball is nearby if you want to take things up a notch. Another top local option for families is the award-winning GreenWood Forest Park, where you can paddle among trees, make things work at the world's only people-powered rollercoaster, see a live show, meet the animals or try den building and archery. More animal meeting is at Dwyfor Rabbit Farm, or drive to the foot of Snowdonia for a more active family day out at Gypsy Wood. The famed 18-hole Nefyn & District Golf Club at Porthdinllaen is only a few minutes from the site.
