Liked: It’s a lovely very clean and thought through camping site! The owners are very friendly and helpful. There is a coffee machine in the laundry area. It’s really good - a cut above the other sites we have been to. The kids loved the playground and the forest walks are great. Overall an amazing campsite. Good drainage even when massively rainy so the tent remains dry. We had three days of bad weather, but a great nonetheless, which says a lot. We will be back!

Liked: We had a splendid time in the Barcdy campsite. The location was ideal to visit Northwestern Wales. The grounds are surrounded by trees that resonate with birdsong, and a walking trail allows you to leave the campsite away from the road. The pitches, delineated by lines, give every party a good amount of space, and include picnic tables for the tents. Water taps are numerous. The shower blocks are remarkably clean and functional, the showers can be set to very hot. The availability of a drying machine was a nice touch although we did not need to use it. The campsite is definitely for those who want a peaceful time, a number of policies ensure it is as quiet as possible at night.

Disliked: Nothing to complain about really, but it would be even better if basic food such as fresh milk, eggs, bread, etc could be purchased on site. At present the nearest shop is a mile or so away.

Liked: Pitches were nice and big, plenty of space between each one. There were picnic benches available if we wanted to sit at one. Fire pits and would was also available from the reception which was handy for a few wet and windy evenings. Toilet facilities were nice and clean. Staff were friendly.

Disliked: Wasn't sure of which taps were drinking water.

Liked: Great views, clean toilets/showers.good size pitches

Disliked: You have to go front ways onto the pitches which can be more tricky depending on which pitch, though wasn’t a big problem for us.This also means the services are on the wrong end to normal meaning very long pipes to connect to waste and water. The WiFi is quite hit and miss

Liked: Lovely friendly welcome, clean facilities and beautiful views from the site. We organised to hike Snowdon and there is a fab park and ride just outside Porthmadog which made the trip much easier and more scenic. Close by we visited the Slate Caverns at Zip World - which were beautiful and the guide was extremely informative.

Disliked: If staying in the top field top tip to set up at the toilet end! The lane is a bit of a walk in the middle of the night.

Disliked: Men using ladies toilet, even though it was clearly shown as being ladies men were using it

From the manager: Thank you for the lovely review and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. We are supprised to hear that men were using the ladies toilets, we are firm belivers that the ladies toilet is a space for ladies only and would not tolerate anyone not following this. We really wish you would have let us know while you were here who it was so we could have ensured they were unable to book with us again.

Liked: Fabulous site, tents well spaced out, plenty of room for kids to play and a nice little play park too. Toilets and showers were in great condition and very clean- (my daughter called them posh!) Handy laundry room too. Friendly owners, and a well looked after site. All in all, a fab site and we’ll be back. Thanks

Local attractions

Coastline, castles, caverns, museums, steam railways, sailing, horse riding and hiking are all nearby, as is fishing at the two Tecwyn lakes within walking distance and sea fishing for mackerel and bass from Llandanwg Beach. For wanderers, the local walks accessible straight from site can take you roaming around Welsh woodlands with wondrous views of the Llŷn Peninsula in one direction and Snowdon in the other. If you're spending the day at Llandanwg, have a walk too across the causeway at low tide to Shell Island, where over two hundred different types of shell including oyster, whelk and cockle are washed up each winter; go from January to June for the best bags. Delve into days at Harlech, Porthmadog and Barmouth too, all popular pulls on the north Wales coastal trail. Harlech has a beaut beach backed by sand dunes, the famed Royal St David's Golf Club and the even more famed Harlech Castle, scene of the longest siege in Welsh history during the Wars of the Roses. (Wales is of course castle country, so get to Cricieth, Caernarfon and Conwy as well.) At Porthmadog, it'll quickly become apparent that these parts are also steam railway country: the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway and the Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest narrow-gauge railway journey in the world, both start in Porthmadog and the Welsh Highland Railway finishes here. Barmouth, the seaside town with another beaut beach, adjoining estuary and the Mawddach Trail, is about 13 miles to the south. Also within easy reach, you should count on a day out at decidedly individual Italianate village Portmeirion, the National Slate Museum at Llanberis or Llechwedd Slate Caverns, three more popular north Welsh pulls (take another puffy trip on the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis up to Snowdon's summit). You could also up the ante with activity day out at Glasfryn Parc and Greenwood Forest Park, visit King Arthur’s Labyrinth (underground boat trips!) or the Centre for Alternative Technology, both near Machynlleth.
