On the eastern fringes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), Ty Tandderwen Caravan Park is a family-run site with spacious (and well-spaced) grass and hardstanding pitches. There’s nothing but grazing land and wooded hills all around, plus mountains in the distance; and the only sounds are birdsong and the gentle rippling of the River Dee, which runs just a couple of fields away. By the way, remember to pack your rod, for both fly-fishing and angling are allowed here. Dogs are welcome too, and they might wag their tails in delight when you take them to Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid; five minutes’ drive), where they might join you on a swim or on your paddleboard exploration of the shore, or walk by your side as you stroll along forested trails, making regular stops to take in views of the water. Other hikes might lead you to the forest at Aberhirnant (10 minutes), Rhiwagor Waterfall (half an hour), or to viewpoints like Moel y Garnedd (15 minutes) and Cwm Cynfal (half an hour). Back on site, while the children burn what energy they have left in the play area, you can fire up the barbecue, having sourced your provisions in Bala town (10 minutes), where there are also several restaurants. Wherever you eat (on site or in town), set aside a good hour or so before bed for a spot of stargazing – Eryri is an International Dark Sky Reserve, and you should be in for a starry treat on a clear night.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Nice setting, with great views, well maintained pitches. Friendly and available host/ manager. Ladies toilets clean and functional. we were given a great corner spot which was nice and quiet.

Disliked Busy site with a few larger groups, but it was school holidays. Ladies toilets were quite old.

Liked Campsite was amazing, facilities had been kept beautifully clean. Perfect hub for exploring Wales. 5 minute drive to Bala lake and village which in itself is lovely. Incredible views from the campsite and the drive to and from. Lovely walks around the fields surrounding and down to the river. Little park in the middle of the camp was great, as my son could go play whilst we watched from the tent.

Liked Very friendly site, children friendly with a play area & large grass area for them to run around on, most of the pitches you can see this area to keep an eye on them, there is at least 4 large fields with wildlife habitat left, but also mowen grass for you to walk around, there is a on site small shop that stocks the essential, also a laundrette on site at very good price for wash & tumble dryer, there is 4 sink stations with drainers to wash your pots & pans, the toilets & showers are clean & presentable, the staff are very friendly, checking on you & trying to make sure your needs are met, free wifi available thought out the site, there are 4 alpacas that the children can feed just as you enter the site,

Liked Just had a 3 day camping trip here, what a lovely campsite, showers/toilets clean and the showers are hot! Kids played for hours on the swings, and we loved going to feed the alpacas every evening

Liked Friendly site in a picturesque area with lovely staff including the groundsman.
Elin was so ameniable and nothing seemed too much trouble for our three night stay. Very convenient for Bala village and steam railway which is highly recommended! Didn't use the onsite shop but a great facility
For a family site it was very quiet. Great to see parents playing games with their kids. Goes without saying the Alpacas are great fun. We will return I'm sure

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked Very quiet and tranquil place. Large pitch, fully serviced. Loved the fact that hook up point is lit up at nighttime. Clean shower/toilet blocks. Loved feeding lamas 😁 Plenty of room for dogs walking, plenty of dog waste bins dotted around. Not much to do for teens, so some gaming equipment if needed is a must. WiFi signal is good, but not fast enough for anything really. After 10:30 pm is quiet time, which is really nice. Close to the Bala lake, but if have water equipment, need to drive (5minutes). Not very big site, which we found as a bonus. All round, loved staying there for 10 nights…

Disliked Shop only open for short time in the morning and evening, could be stocked better. However, there are coop and spar in the village.

The National White Water Centre (15 minutes’ drive) is the place for high-octane aquatic adventures on the River Tryweryn – from guided rafting excursions and canyoning, to extreme independent sessions (for experienced rafters only). The industrial heritage of North Wales comes alive at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes) with guided tours of the former mines, where you can also have a subterranean round of miniature golf. If you’re after the sweet kick of adrenaline, there are also thrilling rides like the Titan zipline, which will have you flying above the area’s distinctive slate landscape. It’s a much gentler vibe at Betws-y-Coed (45 minutes), a pretty village stretching between the rivers Conwy and Llugwy, with pretty woodland walks (including the family-friendly Tan Dinas Path) leading to stone bridges and waterfalls like Rhaeadr Ewynnol / Swallow Falls.
