  • Comfy site on a smallholding in the Conwy hills
  • A half-mile walk to village pub with grub
  • 30 mins to Snowdonia National Park; 20 to Colwyn Bay
Between the mountains and the sea, a stay on this quiet smallholding gives you space to consider your options. Pant Y Rhedyn is 10 acres of meadow land in the hills of the Conwy valley. It's fresh air and views stretching from the Snowdonian mountains to the Irish Sea. It's also, in the midst of all this open space and nature, an extremely comfy spot to stay. Roomy geodesic domes give you all-day views of the finest kind, from the morning mists to the sunsets and the night sky. There's a log fire to toast your toes inside and campfire to toast what you choose outside. After days of fresh air and nights of stargazing, you'll appreciate the beds (one double, two single sofa beds) and warm blankets. Morning cuppas can be brewed on the camping stove, and the kitchens have all that's necessary for a basic bit of nosh. Fridges, freezers and washing-up facilities are communal, but every dome comes with its own hot shower and toilet. There's nothing like barbecuing some bangers on a fire while you sit under a canopy of stars and plan tomorrow's escapades. If you'd like things a little easier, the pub's a 10-minute walk or a five-minute drive down the road, serving up hot grub and local ales.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Perfect quiet location off country roads with mountain and woodland views and 15 mins drive from the coast/beach. Pub 5 min walk down the road which also serves food. Very spacious pitch with its own compost toilet, sink, picnic table and fire pit. Communal area for washing up, showering, drinking water tap and a small shop selling essentials at very reasonable prices. The owner, Claire, was very attentive and approachable for anything you need or advice on places worth a visit within the area. This is a really good base for visiting north wales yet very peaceful and relaxing if you just want some time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Wifi at the pub but there is a really good network signal on the site itself to say it is quite remote. Thanks Claire, we really enjoyed our stay with you and will be returning.

Disliked: Having to go home

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: The whole concept of the site was great: very small in terms of numbers, generous pitches with personal compost toilet, firepit and picnic table, eco-friendly. It is lovely to be surrounded by meadows, no cars in sight, with views in different directions. Claire has thought of everything - there are charging points, you can use the fridge and freezer in the communal area, for example - and was brilliant at responding to requests and being general present and friendly. The compost toilet was smart, nicely lined inside, and the dried meadow grass was a fragrant alternative to sawdust!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Everything (yet again) we have stayed here now each year since covid (seems a distant memory now) and each time is better than the last. This year we had a few days break with friends who also fell in love with the place and want to return again. Literally every little detail has been thought of and you will need for nothing.

Disliked: Having to return home.

Liked: The location and natural space was great. We were made to feel very welcome by Claire. Small campsite with beautiful views, a good hot shower, great washing up facilities, with some lovely little touches. The kids loved the space to run and play without us fearing they’d disturb other campers.

Local attractions

You're in a plum spot here for activities both mountainous and coastal. Surf Snowdonia (30 minutes' drive) even combines the two, with a giant artificial wave lake on the edge of the mountains. The national park visitor centre (25 minutes) is a good port of call for tips and guides to this fabulous region of mountain railways, high peaks and waterfalls. Many hiking and biking trails of all lengths start right there. If you want to hit the heights without huffing and puffing, the mountain railway takes you from Llanberis (50 minutes) to the top of Mount Snowdon, giving you staggering views all the way without you having to stagger anywhere. Heading seawards, the beach and traditional seaside attractions of Colwyn Bay are 20 minutes' drive away: stop driving when you hit the sea (obviously) and bag yourself a boat trip down the River Conwy or round the coast. Nearby Bodnant Garden (15 minutes from site) is a bountiful National Trust site of horticultural history, wild meadows and walking trails. Those who want to see the trees from a different angle meanwhile should head to Zip World (50 minutes), nothing to do with trousers and everything to do with zooming down Europe's longest zipline, swinging on high ropes and bouncing on underground trampolines.
