The Boat House: Barbecue by the river

General

  • Scenic waterside site in the grounds of a former inn
  • A mile to the east of Llandrinio; a 20-minute drive from Oswestry
  • Free fishing for guests; direct access to the River Severn

If you're new to Powys and Shropshire, picking a well-positioned plot can be a tricky business – with scenic River Severn walks, Offa's Dyke Path and lots of lovely greenery about, you'll likely be hunting high and low for a place with access to all three. Enter The Boat House, a small-scale site in the grounds of a former inn that ticks all the aforementioned boxes.

Besides adding a generous dollop of sightly scenery to your stay, this site's location on a river opens up a whole raft of leisure possibilities. Got a canoe, kayak or paddleboard? Carry it down the site's grassy slope and straight into the water. The Boat House also has fishing rights on this silvery stretch of the Severn, so you're welcome to cast your line and see what bites. The best part? Angling is free of charge for those who choose to make their holidays here.

Facilities on site are simple but well-maintained: there are toilets and a shower where you can freshen up after messing about on the water. Being able to light up a barbecue may also help keep your travel team chipper. When the weather turns or you fancy something a little more elaborate than self-grilled grub, it's a short trip to larger towns like Oswestry (20 minutes' drive) where there's scope for dinner out. And, although pints are pulled no longer at The Boat House, it's a mere mile to a local Llandrinio pub.

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Please note that occasionally the river floods. We close the site during this time as the field is too wet. We will change dates or refund bookings should this occur.

Beautiful site with lovely views. Peter and Freda were so warm and welcoming. They couldn’t be more helpful and went above and beyond. We fed chickens, enjoyed the river and used one of their firepits with hanging grill! Absolutely brilliant stay and we will definitely be back. Its a make your own fun site with a little walk to the immaculate toilets/shower but perfect for those wanting to be outside and somewhere spacious and beautiful.

Facilities were spotless, very well look after and explained on arrival. You have access to a toaster, kettle, tea, coffee and milk if needed.

The actual site was well kept, grass had been cut and no rubbish anywhere on site.

Owners are extremely friendly and made everyone feel welcome.

Would recommend staying here for a nice break, especially with some lovely walks nearby.

    Great senic location.
Owners very friendly and pop around everyday to make sure all is well
Wash house with hot running water for dishes was great.

Enclosed field great for kids and the dog to keep them safe. Peter came around everyday and gave the kids free ice lolly. Was a nice touch,.

Being able too make tea and coffee in the wash room was great saved us boiling water often.

Fire pit was great... really lovely touch. Although asthmatic effected my asthma.

This place is great for adults into fishing or canoeing.

    Disliked:

Shower tokens £1 each for 10 mins. Fee was expensive for family of four for three nights. I feel this should of been included. @£113.00.

We also didn't know this until second day. When we tried to have a shower. The counter starts immediately too as soon as the coin goes in. It caused my daughter to panic as she's Autistic and struggles with timers. She wouldn't wash her hair fear of it running out.

The wash-house and toilets is not directly located next to tent pitches a walk up a road. It felt very airy walking there at night, when dark.

Only 2 showers. 4 toilets, bank holiday weekend was very busy. We opted to shower at night and wash mornings. Hot running water room with shower and sink. So could wash and strip wash kids.

We happened to pitch next to a wasps nest. Not Freda or Peters fault. (Nature)

However, I do feel it could of been dealt with quickly with professional advice. Instead of pouring boiling water down the hole in the ground as they had borrowed. This wasn't working, wasps they were quite angry. I explained this.
My husband, ended up dealing with them best he could. It ruined our break really, having to eat inside tent and our younger daughter has ADHD and autism she was panicking. I think my husband was quite enjoying taking on the wasps.
The nest clearly holds a very substantial amount of wasps. Although we killed quite a few, I react to stings so was very wary. It ruined our break.. it was difficult trying to manouve around the tent other than at night. Quite scary for the kids.

We thought the kids would be able to paddle in the river. However, the banks to river are very steep and muddy. Water is murky and around a meter deep. So no way of paddling. ..

There is not alot within walking distance, kids where bored. Our fault for not fully researching before we booked. Just advice for other families

    No WiFi or 4G.

Local attractions

Offa's Dyke Path and the Severn Way both pass directly opposite the site, giving you lots of choice when it comes to pedestrian rambles. These long-distance paths open up a range of landscapes: while Offa's Dyke runs from north to south (or south to north, depending which way you look at it) along an Anglo-Saxon ridgeway, the Severn Way (as its name suggests) generally sticks close to Britain's longest river.

If you've caught the walking bug, an active jaunt to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (30 minutes' drive) or Snowdonia National Park (about an hour) could also be on the agenda. If energy levels run low, though, perhaps you'll plump for a restorative ride on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (30 minutes), followed by some tasty Welsh cakes.

For a bit more history, there's the Llanfyllin Workhouse (20 minutes), Powis Castle (20 minutes) and the National-Trust managed Attingham Park Estate (30 minutes). If you like to combine the past with flurries of feathered flight, check out Battlefield Falconry Centre (30 minutes).

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (13.3 kilometres)
  • Much Wenlock Priory (36.5 kilometres)
  • Stokesay Castle (37.9 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Chirk Castle (21.3 kilometres)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (25.3 kilometres)
