  • Family-friendly site on the banks of the Banwy river in Mid Wales
  • A five-minute drive to a steam railway; 10 minutes to Welshpool
  • Pub and play area on site; river fishing permitted
Whether you're planning days of outdoor pursuits or scenic steam railway rides, your holiday in Mid Wales should be off to a flying start at Henllan Caravan Park… This family-friendly site first opened in the 1960s and it has grown into a very gorgeous spot to set down on the banks of the Banwy river, with fishing available in the river and a play area set up for those guests who have brought the whole family along. The on-site pub-restaurant is another highlight; ask about the entertainment and opening days (they vary throughout the season) when you arrive. There’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away for any keen golfers and the surrounding Powys landscape has many opportunities for things like mountain biking, swimming, climbing and hiking for all the adventurous types. Shops and that sort of thing can be tracked down in Welshpool, 10 minutes’ drive away. This historic town has some gorgeous Georgian buildings and the Montgomery Canal for a peaceful stroll or you could look in on the National Trust’s Powis Castle and Garden (20 minutes) while you’re around there. For more nostalgic activities, the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is five minutes’ drive from the site. Back at your riverside site, there’s a shower block ready for you to freshen up. The pitches themselves are all well maintained and flat with great views, so your stay should be both comfortable and scenic. Please note that the facilities block is approximately 300 yards from the main pitching area.

What customers say

Well-kept, friendly spot with roomy, flat sites & nice river views. Staff are helpful, facilities spotless, and there's a great dog run. The pub's a big plus. Downside: toilets/showers are a bit of a hike from tents, not ideal for families with little ones or mobility issues.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Great open field with tree shelter around the edges(kept the tent dry mainly), as it rained. Only a short 200m drive off the main road, so easy to navigate to without using much of the single track lane the site is situated on. Very peaceful couple of nights. Nicely kept field and roads and grounds on the site. Great prompt and friendly welcome from the reception on arrival.

Disliked Only one shower and sink in the toilet/washing block. I can see that being inconvenient in busy periods. The said block is quite a way from the camping ground at the back of the static site area(I drove to it). It seems it would be better situated near the camping ground as the static caravans have their own facilities. Also I have paid much less per night to stay in a tent at a smaller site and a similar sized site, with much bigger and better facilities for showering and washing etc.

Liked Lovely, quiet, well kept site. Park for children although it’s not really suitable for smaller children. Right next to the river with lots of paths down to see it and go for a dip if you like! Bins and chemical waste conveniently located. Grass pitches level. Close to town

Disliked Toilet blocks a good walk away,

Liked Pleasant gentleman who greeted us and explained where everything was. Good ground to pitch the tent on and plenty of space. Perfect enclosure for dogs to be let off the lead for a runaround and safe site to walk around. My daughter enjoyed the little park and it was flat enough for her to use her scooter. The paths were very well lit up.

Disliked I guess the only real issue was the toilet blocks being a distance away from the tent pitches but that didn’t really bother us as we enjoyed seeing the little gardens around the static caravans. We weren’t able to connect to any WiFi while we were there but we wanted more of a relaxed break without the use of phones.

Liked Flat pitches with individual water supply at each 4 point hook-up.
Secure dog exercise area, allowing off lead opportunities (We had 3 dogs).
Excellent site for access to heritage railway.
Easy access to chemical disposal point and comprehensive recycling
Worth my star rating for these reasons.

Disliked !0 minute walk to the only toilet/shower block available, situated in middle of static caravan park - no disabled facility so if you have mobility issues (as I have) or if not self-contained and need access to facilities at night do not chose this site. Whist there we had up, to 5 other tents/vans on site most with well-behaved children. Even this low number resulted in queues for the single shower bay in each toilet area.
Apparently there was a bar on site but nobody told us of it. Manager was very off-hand and unwelcoming. No Wi-fi

Liked Lovly site , will return.
Had a quirky feel about the area.

Disliked If they could state clearly why they don’t want you to follow postcode .. because of very tight lanes … instead of saying post code won’t work that would make it easier for the travelers.
We didt follow postcode but we did follow satnav to site .. it does take you there as long as you can get down them lanes .. so wording needs changing on that

Liked Beautiful site. Tent pitches erea is kept well maintained and clean. Owner is very polite and helpful. Excellent little park for the kids to play on and is enclosed from the river

Disliked Only downside is the toilets ate a bit of a walk and out the way of the tent pitches so if you bring children who need to go regularly or in the middle of the night, then it's a bit of a pain haha.

Liked A really nice, clean and quiet site. Small park right next to the tent pitch and loads of room for children to play.

Disliked Toilets are a little bit of a walk not too far but for a lady in the middle. Of the night it’s a little off putting .

Local attractions

With Eryri/Snowdonia National Park to the west and the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south-east, there’s a lot of hiking accessible from this site. You could set your compass towards Lake Vyrnwy (35 minutes' drive), just outside of Snowdonia, for a day of lakeside walks, watersports and cycling followed by a cream tea – or perhaps head up towards Pistyll Rhaeadr (45 minutes) for a four-mile hike with a reward in the form of a spectacular waterfall. Add some historical elements to your holiday in the Shropshire Hills AONB. The Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (35 minutes) still stands from the Bronze Age and the moorlands of the surrounding Stapeley Hill make for another splendid walk. Then there are the Stiperstones (45 minutes), a cool ridge that's made up of rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old – another place for a good long wander. When you’re ready to muck into the rural way of life, head to Park Hall The Countryside Experience (40 minutes), a farm with play areas that has opened its doors for families to get involved in animal activities like meeting the alpacas or watching the pig racing.
