  • Remote Powys site on a working farm a 25-minute drive from Newtown
  • Montgomery Canal 25 minutes’ drive; Powis Castle and Garden 50 minutes
  • Well-equipped pod with kitchen; separate bathroom pod; horses welcome
When it’s time to get away from it all (especially from other people…), it might be a good idea to book a break at Pant Y Crasty Holiday Pods, on a traditional farm in Powys. Why, you might ask? Well, it’s a blissfully secluded spot, for starters, in a lush valley a 25-minute drive from Newtown. For seconds, there is only one pod on site, so you will have complete peace and quiet. The pod in question (powder blue on the outside but lined with natural timber inside) has two beds that can be pushed together to make a double; a kitchen corner with a small fridge, kettle, pots, pans, cutlery and crockery; and a small table and chairs. However, chances are that you’ll prefer to consume your meals outside, where a seating area (with firepit) looks across the lush Welsh countryside. A separate pod houses the pristine modern bathroom. Because the pod is on a working farm, with livestock in every field, canine companions are not allowed; however, the owners will be happy to welcome your horse (for an additional fee), either in a stable or in a field. There are plenty of walks in the local area, including at the Llandinam Gravels Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) on the River Severn, where you might spot oystercatchers and plovers (and otters, too, if you’re lucky); at the rocky Ffrwd Fawr Waterfall (25 minutes); or along the Montgomery Canal (25 minutes).

Camping pod

Liked Huge thank you to Karin, Nick and Annie, for an excellent stay at this fantastic farm retreat… it was everything we hoped for! You were so welcoming and really made Pant y Crasty feel like a home away from home. A stunning valley setting, beautiful views and the comfiest bed I’ve been in for ages. The pod accommodation sits snug in the lush valley with the bathroom pod sat just behind it. Facilities are very modern and clean, a lovely hot shower, tea and coffee provided, and an excellent fire pit that we sat around, cooked our dinner on and watched the stars away from the light pollution of the city.
We felt so comfortable and secluded at the pod, it has been an excellent stop on our way to North Wales. We had a peaceful day at Clywedog Reservoir which is nearby too! Waking up to the green surroundings and lambs in the field next to us was the perfect reset we needed before heading on.
We will definitely be back to stay again, thank you so much for having us!

Camping pod

Liked Alas my stay was only for one night due to reason for my visit to this beautiful part of Wales. I enjoyed every moment from arrival to leaving. Karin who met me on arrival was very friendly & welcoming. The two pods are on a small rise above the Farmhouse which is down a narrow road off the main road. Parking is off the road with a short steepish climb to the pods. Area is fenced off from the fields so worries on the sheep popping in for tea.
The sleeping pod is very well appointed. A double bed low down to the floor obviously dominates. If you’re used to sleeping bags this is easy to get down & up from. It’s also, for me ,very comfortable & snug. I had a good sleep despite the heatwave. Inside are chairs & small table with selection of coffee , tea , biscuits etc. a small fridge with a small bottle of milk is provided plus kettle & even a small fan ! A cupboard has a selection of cutlery & cooking items. Over the door Karin had hung a light curtain to reduce glare from the Sun. For me it was all I needed & was very comfortable.
The washroom pod is just behind sleeping quarters. A toilet, sink & shower. Again clean & functional. Shower head doubles as sink tap & pulls out of sink
& attaches to a holder wall above shower floor. Toilet paper etc provided as were towels. I found it clean tidy & easy to use.
Outside a table with two chairs & parasol for enjoying the view.
The view of the surrounding area is awesome. In addition on the night i stayed there were no clouds & no light pollution. The Stars could be seen in all their glory. I spent an hour after midnight enjoying the beauty which i am unable to see where i live in a town.
Prior to leaving after 11am I met Karin’s husband who is a farmer. Again he also took time to chat & tell me about the Farm & their life . When i left it felt like saying goodbye to folks i had known for ages.
The location is near Powys Castle & Gardens which is well worth a visit. But within 90 mins in various directions there are trails,Castles & beaches. Within 15 minutes there is a petrol station & a big NISA store plus a pub or two. Your hosts will point you in the right direction.
For me Pant Y Crasty was a great choice.
Great location, great views.
Comfortable accommodation & privacy.
Off road parking. No noise save for occasional sheep!

Friendly & welcoming hosts for whom this a new venture.

Disliked I only had a short weekend break to enjoy it.

Local attractions

The Falconry Experience Wales (25 minutes’ drive) operates only by appointment, so get on its website as soon as your Welsh holiday is booked. After meeting and handling some of the resident raptors (from red kites and kestrels, to hawks and eagles, and more in between), you'll get to see them soar and hover in the skies. Although it started its life as a medieval fortress, National Trust - Powis Castle and Garden (50 minutes) was heavily reworked into an elegant stately home in the late 16th century. Check out the collection of artworks, tapestries and furniture, including a marble table decorated with semi-precious stones, then head out on to the terraced gardens to take in views of the Severn Valley. There are dramatic waterfront walks to be had at Ynyslas National Nature Reserve (55 minutes), an area of peat bogs, mudflats and sand dunes on the estuary of the River Dyfi. In addition to wild orchids and saltmarsh flowers, you might see birds of prey and otters.
