  • Peaceful, family-run site with café in the Welsh Radnor hills
  • 50 minutes' drive to the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • 10 minutes to shops, pubs and grub in Rhayader
A 10-minute drive from the old market town of Rhayader and surrounded by nothing but trees, green fields and hills, Honeybrook Holidays is a definite gem. Red kites circle the skies over the site, and you and the kids can get eagle-eyed spotting the hares jumping in the fields: the Honeybrook owners like to encourage the wildlife here so you'll be able to spot birds, bees butterfliess, hedgehogs, owls and much more. When it's time for a potter about, the café makes a tiptop spot for breakfast, lunch and evening meals (on request). Rhayader means ‘waterfall on the Wye’ in Welsh, and the river tumbling under the old stone bridge of the town has starred in many holiday snaps. Shops, pubs with fresh local food and a thriving livestock market make it more than a postcard opportunity, so spend some time there to see rural Wales at work and play.

Local attractions

Follow the red kites to Gigrin Farm in Rhayader to see the creatures close up: the feathered population congregates on the feeding station in the afternoons giving a privileged view of the birds battling and dive bombing for dinner. The Elan valley (40 minutes’ drive) is half natural, half manmade, a landscape of rivers, dams and reservoirs created by Victorian engineers to supply fresh water. Now it’s a peaceful part of mid Wales where visitors bike and hike along trails to suit all (pushchairs and wheelchairs included), fish the lakes and spot otters. Take a trip to the famed Devil’s Bridge Falls (45 minutes' drive) for the eardrum-numbing roar as the Rheidol's waters plunge into the deep gorge; a popular trail leads over vertigo-inducing bridges and past a robbers’ cave. The ruins of 13th-century Castell Dinas (50 minutes), highest castle in England and Wales, are also great for firing imaginations: those fired up by the surrounding Brecon Beacons can hike Waun Bant, highest of the Black Mountains from here. After the wilderness, take the waters at the smart Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells (10 minutes), and learn about another 19th-century wonder at the National Cycle Collection.
