  • Self-catering glamping stays on a small farm site in Mid Wales
  • A 35-minute drive from the Brecon Beacons National Park; walks nearby
  • Private patio with a hot tub, firepit, barbecue and mountain views
Longing to get away to Mid Wales for its mountains and splendid scenery? If you want the pleasures of a rural retreat but don’t want to part with the little luxuries, then the self-catering glamping site at Great House Farm strikes a nice balance between the two – and all 35 minutes' drive away from the Brecon Beacons National Park. Based on a hillside farm that dates back to the 1600s, the Jones family have farmed the land for over 50 years… back then the farm, originally named Llandeilo Hall, was quite a grand settlement for its time and part of land owned by the University of Oxford. Now, the working beef and sheep farm is still rather scenic, sitting at 272 metres high on Aberedw Hill in Radnorshire, with views across the valley. Your private timber deck, with a large custom-built cast-iron firepit, barbecue and seating area, it's a top spot to appreciate the mountain views (pick out Pen Y Fan and Hay Bluff in the distance). The central heating and hot tub will certainly keep you warm both indoors and out, even if there’s a light chill. With a small fully equipped kitchen area, you’ll also be sorted for prepping your own meals. For ingredients, the nearest food shop is 10 minutes’ drive away. It's easy to unwind elsewhere too, as each accommodation has wifi, a smart TV and charging point, plus an integrated shower room with a walk-in shower, sinks and toilet (towels and bedding provided) so you can keep feeling fresh.

Chwefru camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: I recently stayed at great house farm luxury pods and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a beautiful spot and amazing little pod with hot tub and a patio with a fire pit. The owners were very friendly and humble. There are animals on site I.e chickens, pigme goats, sheep and two donkeys. I would definitely recommend a stay here if you’re looking for an escape for a few days. 10/10

Disliked: I wouldn’t say i really disliked anything but if I had too I’d say make sure that you take a torch as lighting on way to pod is not very good. Oh and make sure you grab your food or groceries before heading on out to the farm because there are no shops nearby.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your kind words - we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and our animals are very popular and they do like being fussed. We agree with the lighting and, unfortunately, due to planning restrictions we are not able to improve this, but we do provide a torch in the pods. We do suggest in our welcome information to get your essentials before you arrive as we are a few miles from shops, though all the major supermarkets deliver to site. We look forward to seeing you again sometime.

Chwefru camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: We felt we had lots of privacy in the end pod. It was well equipped. We loved sitting in the hot tub watching the animals and the very beautiful view. Useful information in the pack. The location was beautiful and very handy to get to places in the area. Brecon, Talgarth, Llandrindod Wells, Hay on wye. USB plugs. It was very well set up to walk from the pod to the hot tub.

Disliked: Would like opt out on toiletries for a more eco-friendly stay - didn't think at the time. Thought it would be good to have egg cups on display. More standing space in Fridge for bottles would have been good.

Wye 1 bedroom camping pod (hot tub, six person)

Liked: Amazing! I was really unsure about staying in a pod as we’ve always been used to a full on packed holidays with the kids and we weren’t sure if we would be bored, two of our kids have disabilities as well so we were very anxious. Well we weren’t bored at all and we had no need to be anxious whatsoever! As soon as we arrived the relaxation just hit us all, we didn’t realise how much we need the R&R. We stayed in the wye pod for 6 people. It had literally everything we needed in the pod. Every type of cutlery/pan/casserole dishes/chopping boards/bowls/cups/plates/glasses… Everything! The brilliant hosts of the pods provide washing up liquid, cloths, tea towels, oven gloves, toilet roll, waste bags and shower gel/shampoo&conditioner/body lotion. All towels are provided- a hand towel, bath towel and a hot tub towel each. When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us and the hot tub was used almost straight away! I miss the hot tub it was AMAZING! The views WOW you can see for miles of nothing but greenery, and all the farm animals were so funny to watch our eldest loved spending time down at the fence with them. From the whole pod inside and out we could see the animals loving life throughout the day. I have to say the animals are so well taken care of and there are two donkeys and they are the happiest donkeys we’ve ever seen and it was a pleasure to wake up each morning watching them chase around. It’s a working farm but we were never woken up or disturbed at all by any noise, the only noise we could here were the animals and that was once our doors/windows were open, such a lovely sound to hear. There’s plenty of grass areas and a large patio area right by the pod with a full seating area set up and a fire pit/bbq. We’ve never set a fire up before but it was really easy to do and the wood you can get out of the small shed by the car park for £5 a bag (first is free) plus fire starter things are in there two, there’s long matches under the sink. We used two bags of logs over 3 nights. Lynne greeted us when we arrived and shown us how everything worked and answered any questions we had. The next day we asked about going somewhere with the kids and Lynne recommend to go to hay-on- wye (15mins drive away) to see the castle, go to the market (Thursday morning we went) and to try some sheep’s milk ice cream. We did all of these things and it was a really nice day out so thank you for recommending it to us! We had to nip back on the way home to have a last try of the sheep’s milk ice cream it was very nice. All in all it was a magical 3 day break away and we will 100% be returning. My youngest didn’t want to get out of the hot tub and has now requested we get one for home! Also if you get a clear night the sky lights up with thousands of stars it’s gorgeous! I would recommend this place over and over to anyone, we’ve already told family members to check it out. There is also a big Aldi roughly about 20mins drive out for shopping so you literally only need to pack your clothes and any games or the like that you’d want as everything is here ready for you or you can pick up close by. Thank you for a lovely stay all my three boys plus me and the husband had a really really lovely time and we’ll definitely be coming to stay again next year for a little bit longer. Thank you and all the best to you lynne and to your family.

Disliked: Nothing! There was nothing we didn’t like and can’t wait to return.

From the manager: Wow - what can we say - thank you for such a fantastic review and we love reading the details you have included - I think you love the donkeys (Pablo and Barney) as much as we do - such characters and we still watch them for hours - especially when we are doing changeovers. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and really look forward to seeing you again next year - it really was a pleasure to meet you and your family.

Wye 1 bedroom camping pod (hot tub, six person)

Liked: As a family with a younger child and two older it can be tricky to Find a location to stay all are happy with. I can truly say this is one of those places where everyone in the family was happy! The youngest was so happy to sit watching the animals especially the Donkies Whilst the teens were happy chilling in the hot tub! Beautiful location with an excellent pod! Lynne and the team were so friendly and helpful, so knowledgeable on the area and keen to let us know any suggestions. During our stay my wife become unwell so as a treat and a lot Of help from Lynne I arranged to have some flowers for her delivered they were so beautiful especially as I didn’t really give any notice They just went the extra mile which was so nice to experience.

Disliked: Not a dislike but a word of caution if you want to visit places a fair bit of driving will be in order.

Liked: Location, details, bits available This was the most beautiful stay we have ever had the location was stunning, the family were lovely and always on offer if you needed help, upon finding out we had just got married they decorated the pod, it was so relaxing I would definitely go back

Disliked: Nothing!! Although a little out of the way from restaurants etc

From the manager: Thank you both for your kind words. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. You are right, we are in the countryside and our closest places to eat range from a mile (Wheelwrights, Erwood), 3 miles (Griffin, Llyswen and Seven Stars Aberedw), so nothing directly on the doorstep. Best wishes for your future married life and hope to see you again in the future.

Local attractions

If you haven’t already mapped out your walking routes, the footpath to the top of Twyn Y Garth (15 minutes’ walk) is a good place to start. As you walk, look out for a German Howitzer memorial (a large field gun, now rusted away in parts) from World War I and views over the Wye Valley. For more local vistas, Llandeilo Hill (around 20 minutes’ walk to the foot of the hill) likes to show off. Again, it’s possible to walk there directly from the site, past the Llandeilo-Graban Church… just ask the site for more detailed directions. For a spot known by the locals, make your way downhill to Erwood Station Gallery (half an hour’s walk) where there’s a modern art gallery on the site of a former railway station with works by local artists alongside old train carts. A little further afield but worth the extra miles is the Brecon Beacons National Park (35 minutes' drive). It’s already well known for its walks and mountain biking trails but there are also other activities such as watersports, bushcraft and abseiling around the park or underground adventures in the Fforest Fawr Geopark (45 minutes).
