  • Self-catering glamping stays on a small farm site in Mid Wales
  • A 35-minute drive from the Brecon Beacons National Park; walks nearby
  • Private patio with a hot tub, firepit, barbecue and mountain views
Longing to get away to Mid Wales for its mountains and splendid scenery? If you want the pleasures of a rural retreat but don’t want to part with the little luxuries, then the self-catering glamping site at Great House Farm strikes a nice balance between the two – and all 35 minutes' drive away from the Brecon Beacons National Park. Based on a hillside farm that dates back to the 1600s, the Jones family have farmed the land for over 50 years… back then the farm, originally named Llandeilo Hall, was quite a grand settlement for its time and part of land owned by the University of Oxford. Now, the working beef and sheep farm is still rather scenic, sitting at 272 metres high on Aberedw Hill in Radnorshire, with views across the valley. Your private timber deck, with a large custom-built cast-iron firepit, barbecue and seating area, it's a top spot to appreciate the mountain views (pick out Pen Y Fan and Hay Bluff in the distance). The central heating and hot tub will certainly keep you warm both indoors and out, even if there’s a light chill. With a small fully equipped kitchen area, you’ll also be sorted for prepping your own meals. For ingredients, the nearest food shop is 10 minutes’ drive away. It's easy to unwind elsewhere too, as each accommodation has wifi, a smart TV and charging point, plus an integrated shower room with a walk-in shower, sinks and toilet (towels and bedding provided) so you can keep feeling fresh.

Local attractions

If you haven’t already mapped out your walking routes, the footpath to the top of Twyn Y Garth (15 minutes’ walk) is a good place to start. As you walk, look out for a German Howitzer memorial (a large field gun, now rusted away in parts) from World War I and views over the Wye Valley. For more local vistas, Llandeilo Hill (around 20 minutes’ walk to the foot of the hill) likes to show off. Again, it’s possible to walk there directly from the site, past the Llandeilo-Graban Church… just ask the site for more detailed directions. For a spot known by the locals, make your way downhill to Erwood Station Gallery (half an hour’s walk) where there’s a modern art gallery on the site of a former railway station with works by local artists alongside old train carts. A little further afield but worth the extra miles is the Brecon Beacons National Park (35 minutes' drive). It’s already well known for its walks and mountain biking trails but there are also other activities such as watersports, bushcraft and abseiling around the park or underground adventures in the Fforest Fawr Geopark (45 minutes).
