Celtic Woodland Holidays: The Celyn pod

General

  • Woodland park site in west Wales, a 5-minute drive from Builth Wells
  • Half an hour's drive from Elan Valley; 40 minutes from Brecon Beacons
  • Communal kitchen, firepit and gas barbecue; games room and playground

Well-earned rest or Royal Welsh Show, hiking the Beacons or bookshop mooching... it’s all here.

Here’s a spot fit for royalty, a five-minute drive from Builth Wells, home of the Royal Welsh Show. Celtic Woodland Holiday Park is close to town, but surrounded by 10 acres of wooded parkland; you’ll feel away from it all and at the centre of everything.

There’s a lot on site to ensure your stay’s a comfortable one, much of it handily packed into a single hub: next to the bathrooms with a walk-in shower is the laundry with washer and dryer; everyone has access to the fridge and microwave oven in the communal kitchen, and a gas barbecue and firepit are outside.

The hub is also home to a games room, with table football, pool, table tennis and air hockey, as well as a stock of books, magazines and DVDs. For those with an urge to hurtle about, the kids’ playground has swings and slides for the smallest hurtlers and a wooden fort for the larger ones.

If you’re itching to get out and explore west Wales, there are trails through the surrounding woodland; head into Builth Wells, meanwhile, and you can walk paths along the River Wye as far as its source in Chepstow, 136 miles away (although perhaps not best to attempt that in one day).

Please note

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Great location - felt like you were away from it all but a town was just a shot walk/drive away. Site has an honesty shop for amenities which was great! situated in and close to beautiful areas of Wales.

Pod was lovely - cosy, with amazing views, on one side open fields with sheep, and to other woodland, the log burner kept you toasty. I spent most of one rainy day reading in my pod and it was great.

So clean! - Even the communal toilets/ showers and kitchen were always super tidy and clean.

Place felt safe and secure, even when walk to to toilet block late at night.

I had a sauna here an it was great! would recommend!

Lovely Hosts! - I spoke mostly with Nic who was great, recommended some good walks and were always happy to help!

The place had a really chill relaxed vibe, perfect for getting away for a bit which is what I was looking for, would stay again!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but a recommendation, a few more hooks in the pod to hang coats and towels would be nice!

Couldn't get the WIFI to work, but didn't actually ask for help as I just used my data.

well insulated and cosy cabin (very warm)
great location near to the Elan Valley and the Brecon Beacons
    communal pizza oven
communal family room - kids enjoyed playing pool and air hockey
    nice play park
fairy lights around the wood at night
    hot showers

    Disliked:

facilities - cabin kitchen too basic, distance from cabin to water supply / washing up area too far
cabin beds quite cumbersome to assemble - would perhaps be a struggle for lone parents
    cleanliness of communal kitchen
smell of the ladies loos - they were clean, but had a strong smell
size of shower cubicles - limited space to put clothing, towel etc.
difficult to enjoy a family movie whilst others are playing pool / air hockey

Loved absolutely everything about our stay. Quietness, how well thought out it was, owners - just everything.
Even though there are other lodges around you, it’s so peaceful as they are well spaced out and the site itself is not overcrowded.
There’s an honesty shop on site too which I found lovely & definitely not over priced.
All the communal areas are well thought out with plenty of facilities including a bbq and pizza oven!
At night the paths are lit up by fairy lights.
We felt so so safe walking round even though it was in the woods and very dark once it dropped.
My only criticism (if you can call it one) is the hooks on the back of the toilet doors - hit my head on them a few times!! Ha

Local attractions

The annual Royal Welsh Show draws crowds to Builth Wells every July, but there are events at the showground throughout the year. Whether the circus is in town or not, it’s a place worth wandering, as well as stocked with pubs, eateries and supermarkets: pick up a picnic and make for The Groe, a fab riverside park to scoff your sandwiches among views of the 18th-century Wye Bridge.

For bigger walks, along with mountain biking, angling and nature spotting, head half an hour to the Elan valley, an area of lakes, hills and rivers dubbed the Welsh Lake District. To see nature red in tooth and claw and close up, visit the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhyader (25 minutes from site) to see an array of hungry raptors battling it out for their rations.

The peaks and moors, waterfalls and castles of the Brecon Beacons are similarly handy for day trips. To see the heights without the huffing and puffing, head an hour’s drive to Pant for a seat on the Brecon Mountain Railway. Equally doable in a day are the beaches, watersporting and coastal walks around Aberystwyth, an hour and 20 minutes away.

If you're more into surfing the bookshelves, it’s half an hour to Hay-on-Wye, home of the famed literary festival and some two dozen booksellers.
