  • Dog-friendly site in the Brecon Beacons National Park with hill views
  • A 15-minute walk to Brecon town centre; a 15-minute drive to Pen Y Fan
  • Barbecues and firepits permitted; cruises, pubs and shops in the town
Foraging for a place to burrow down in the Brecon Beacons National Park? Your Brecon Beacons escape will be off to a flying start at Popcorn Camping Brecon. Surrounded by hills and on the outskirts of Brecon, a busy market town, you get the best of both worlds here – it’s an easy drive up into the hills that form the site’s backdrop and just 15 minutes’ walk along the canal to get into the town centre. It's likely you’re here plenty of outdoor action – after all, spectacular views and gorgeous scenery are some of what the Brecon Beacons National Park does so well. Keen hikers and cyclists will be in a dreamscape too, especially given that Pen y Fan and Fan Fawr are both 15 minutes’ drive away. If your dog’s a keen hill climber too, that’s great, because the site accepts dogs too. When you feel like a more peaceful day – perhaps eating your way around Brecon’s pubs, restaurants and cafés or taking a canal cruise from the Brecon Canal Basin, 10 minutes’ walk away - that’s more than okay too. Brecon also has a cathedral, next door to tea rooms and a heritage centre, for those of you interested in sinking your teeth into some local history. If you’re wondering where to source snacks and sandwiches for your packed lunches in the mountains, there are shops in the town too. You might want to scope out the sausage and meat situation while you're at it – since the site permits both firepits and barbecues, there’s the potential for making a splendid little spread in the evening time.

Local attractions

Where to get out and about in the fresh air and fine mountain landscapes? Pen y Fan (15 minutes’ drive) is the highest summit in South Wales, and a fine hike at that, so set off for a two to three hour’s hike and prepare for your bucket list moment. If you’re up for the challenge, The Horseshoe Trail (35 minutes) passes by four peaks, including Pen y Fan, and it's famous for its views down from the spectacular green ridge. While you’re in the outdoorsy spirit, Llangorse Lake (15 minutes) is the destination to get stuck into outdoor activities and watersports such as climbing, windsurfing and horse riding. While Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes) may be well-known for its bookshops and book festival, it’s not just about reading: hire out a canoe and take a paddle down the river Wye too. If you’re wondering what else to seek out, there are waterfalls ready to be tracked down in Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (15 minutes) and in the hills behind Brecon, resides the Pen y Crug, old iron age hillfort (five minutes).

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Great pop up site, toilets and showers in the rugby club were clean and tidy (amazing hot showers) a very short walk to Brecon for pubs and walks, good phone signal

Disliked: Couldn’t find the washing up facilities Sadly camped on a weekend there was a rally in the neighbouring field - not the fault of rugby club but it was horrifically noisy until late (maybe worth checking in future if you stay?) there are also kennels next to the site, didn’t bother us as the terrible music drowned out everything but dogs do bark/howl at (I guess) feeding times do something to be aware of

Liked: Nice and close to the rugby pitch were we watched Saturdays match. Facilities were always clean and tidy. Site was quiet and we had plenty of space at our pitch. Close to the town and lovely walks for dogs near the canal and river. Great experience, can’t wait to come back.

Liked: Flat pitch in convenient location, a short walk into Brecon, and near canal and river. Nice views of mountains.

Disliked: Very poor facilities for washing and toilets. Long walk across two rugby pitches to get to only toilet. No bins for recycling. No obvious campsite manager to check in or report any issues. Felt like we were wild camping on the rugby pitch! Hadn't realized the pitches were actually around the edge of a rugby pitch and that there would be training matches on. We stayed for 4 nights. The first night there was a Porta cabin with toilets, mirrors, bins and sinks. This was then removed and all we had left was the toilet facilities at the rugby club. These were only cleaned once in 4 days and were pretty dirty until they were cleaned - loads of dead insects everywhere. Female facilities were 1 toilet in a men's toilet and only sink to clean teeth was right next to a dirty urinal. No provision for cleaning dishes and no standpipes near camping pitches. Just a hose and tap at back of rugby pavilion. Showers were not lockable and just communal. They had made a shower screen out of wood and shower curtains to try and give some privacy. Not fault of rugby club but also house adjoining rugby club has what sounds like a pack of hunting hounds that barked and howled. Sometimes in the middle of the night.
