  • Views of Cambrian mountains, rural and isolated location
  • Surrounded by sheep pastures and vibrant wildlife
  • Plenty historical locations and walks nearby, within walking distance
Fancy waking up to views of lush pastures and the misty Cambrian Mountains? Bag a berth at Blaenyrorfa Holidays and these shall be yours – here, the only building in sight is a traditional farmhouse and the only neighbours are free-range sheep and hens. With trails for rural rambles, historic landmarks and easy access to the coast, this spot makes a brilliant base for walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and pretty much anyone looking to explore this part of Ceredigion.  As previous visitors to this part of Mid Wales will already know, 'remote' doesn't mean 'empty'. Far from it: bustling seaside towns like Aberystwyth, grand medieval buildings like Strata Florida Abbey and waterfalls like Devil's Bridge Falls make this area the rich and varied place it is – and all are easily accessed from this Ystrad Meuring site.  This off-grid site likes to encourage outdoor living, so barbecues and campfires are welcome (firewood is available at the local shop, 10 minutes away by car). Make sure to bring your bike along to this site: the car-free Ystwyth Trail can be joined about a mile away in the nearby village of Tynygraig (because it runs along the old Great Western rail line, you can pedal full steam ahead over this easy terrain). A local pub is also on hand a 10-minute drive away for drinks, snacks and slap-up meals.

The Prancing Moose camping pod

Liked: Beautiful and clean cabin, really cosy, stayed lovely and snug.

Disliked: Not dislike as much but would have liked slightly more secure fencing around the cabin and maybe some chicken wire on the veranda as was traveling with two dogs, felt a bit on edge when outside because I knew they could get out if they wanted to. They were both thinking about it lol.

Local attractions

Hear the call of the great outdoors? Cors Caron Nature Reserve should hit the spot (15 minutes’ drive to the main entrance). This wondrous wetland has bird hides that overlook a mix of habitats, including reedbeds, grasslands, woodlands, rivers and ponds. Also in the Teifi valley, Strata Florida Abbey and its surrounding countryside are particularly scenic (15 minutes). The gentle 3.5-mile walk from here to Pontrhydfendigaid makes a rewarding ramble.  Slightly further afield, Devil’s Bridge Falls on the Mynach and Rheidol rivers is home to three spectacular bridges and a 90-metre cascade. Visitors here can pick up the narrow-gauge steam train that runs through the countryside all the way to Aberystwyth (journey time one hour). This splendid town (25 minutes’ drive from site) is full of old-school seaside charms, including a promenade, castle, local history museum and an array of independent eateries. Nine miles to the east of Aberystwyth (or 30 minutes from site), Bwlch Nant yr Arian Visitor Centre has far-reaching views over the Cambrian Mountains and Cardigan Bay. Curious about Wale's national bird of prey? Here you can get up close and personal with red kites, which are fed by rangers here daily.
