  • Cosy, self-contained shepherd's hut on a 26-acre smallholding
  • A 20-minute drive from the Ceredigion coast; 25 minutes from New Quay
  • Exclusive-use site with private hot tub; dogs welcome
As it happens there are only two spaniels at glamping spot The Three Spaniels, near the village of Cwrtnewydd… and that means there’s a vacancy for a visiting dog to come along and join you for a stay in the site’s shepherd’s hut should you wish. Four-legged team members Woody and Murphy know what it takes to keep travelling pooches (and their owners) happy, and accordingly there’s a safely fenced area around the hut so they can sniff around in security. This is most handy, because it’s likely they’ll have their eyes on the 26 acres of grounds that lie beyond – which you’re all most welcome to get out and wander around at an appropriate time. The two dogs aren’t the only animals you’ll meet around these parts: this site is part of a smallholding that’s also home to sheep, ponies, ducks, hens and a colony of bees, plus a whole range of wildlife. What you won’t meet is lots of other humans – this is an exclusive-use site with just the one shepherd’s hut set up for maximum peace, quiet and chillout time (although owners Dave and Miri are usually around and up for a chat and a cuppa). In between wanders (either on site, through the surrounds or over at the Ceredigion coast), cuddle up in a shepherd’s hut made for two: it’s a smart and cosy setup with underfloor heating, an ensuite shower room and a compact but well-equipped kitchen area. The highlight, though, is surely the private hot tub just outside – a cracking spot to admire the views, or do a bit of stargazing after dark…

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up with a wander nearby, head out for a stint at the coast: it’s a 20-minute drive from here to the coast at Cardigan Bay for beaches or strolls on the Wales Coast Path. Penbryn (half an hour’s drive) is perhaps the pick of the bunch for a quiet beach day, while New Quay (25 minutes) is the place to be for dolphin-spotting boat trips and a plethora of watersports. A little further along the coast is Cardigan (40 minutes) for a poke around in its smartly restored castle. If that’s inspired you to seek out more of the area’s historic places, make off then to St Dogmael’s Abbey and Cilgerran Castle (both just outside Cardigan) or explore the National Trust-owned house, woods and farm at Llanerchaeron (25 minutes). Aiming inland, there are heaps of excellent trails to follow (on foot or by bike) at Brechfa Forest (half an hour) or you can launch canoes for peaceful paddles along the Teifi river.
