Avid recycler? Keeping an eye on your carbon footprint? Carry on your quest to save the planet while on hols with a stay at Parc Maerdy Glamping Holidays, 10 minutes’ drive from the Ceredigion coast and the village of Llangrannog. You’d not believe it to look at the place now, but this smartly landscaped seven-acre site was once an unloved and unproductive slice of agricultural land. It’s been given a new lease of life by local craftsmen Emyr and Keith, who’ve constructed a clutch of cosy pods (with top-notch insulation and heating, of course) to house visitors of the human variety. (Other species? They’re keen to hang out here too: the two lakes are proving popular with wild ducks and migratory birds, and there are frequent spottings of rabbits, badgers and other local critters.) Everything here has been set up with an eco-friendly tinge: the street lighting and the barbecues (one for each pod) are fashioned from recyclable materials, and the shrubs have been planted up in surplus sea shells. It’s all swish rather than sparse though: there are two hot tubs to bubble away in, and a kitchen pod close by for meals and cuppas after you’ve had your soak. You’ve not come to west Wales simply to admire the eco credentials though... nope, you’ve more likely come for beaches, castles, golf and wildlife-spotting out at sea… so you’ll be chuffed to hear that all of the above are within an easily doable 15-minute drive of the site.

Local attractions

Once you’ve become acquainted with the wildlife on site, seek out more of the locals by heading up to Cwmtydu (15 minutes’ drive), where you’ll often spot seals hanging around on the shore. Desperate to see dolphins? You’ve got a good chance of coming across a pod or two on a boat trip from New Quay (15 minutes). Beaches (plural) should surely feature on any west Wales break, so set out to the sands of Aberporth, Tresaith and Penbryn – all are within a 15-minute drive, and the coastal path links them together if you fancy taking in all three in one go. Llangrannog (10 minutes) has a fine beach too, along with plenty of activity in the form of horse riding, go-karting, a climbing wall and a ski centre. Castles are another can’t-miss around here: both Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn (each 20 minutes) have fine examples to visit. Llanerchaeron (also 20 minutes), while not actually a castle, makes for another fine visit if you’ve an eye for 18th-century elegance. Golf clubs ready to see some action? There’s a particularly challenging nine-hole course to test your skills on five minutes away.
