  • Peaceful Stirlingshire site among acres of traditional farmland
  • A 20-minute drive to Stirling; 15 mins to Blair Drummond Safari Park
  • Back to basics pitches on a working farm with River Forth fishing
Sometimes simplicity is the best way… and it’s as stripped-back as they come at Southfields Meadows. There are no toilets, showers or electrical connections at this serene Stirlingshire site, but what it lacks in facilities it certainly makes up for with stunning scenery. These peaceful pitches are set among acres of traditional farmland on a working farm where you neighbours will be fields full of cows, sheep and crops. You may spot other beasts here too, as wilder visitors include hares, otters, beavers and roe deer – and don’t forget that a working farm also means you’re likely to see tractors and other machines doing their thing in the fields. The fields are nice enough to look at, but it’s the more far-reaching views over the hills towards Stirling Castle that are the real standout here – particularly at sunset hour, when things often get quite colourful. The farm also backs onto the River Forth, with an option for guests to fish the waters for no extra charge. It’s all rather laidback at this site – dogs are welcome, and you’re allowed to boost your alfresco evenings with a barbecue or a campfire. It’s a place that’s very much about peace, quiet and nature though, so it doesn’t accept large groups or hen/stag parties. If you fancy a pint or meal out, the local pub is about 10 minutes' drive away in the village of Thornhill. For more dining options and shops, Stirling (20 minutes) is the place to go.

Local attractions

If nature doesn’t come to you, you’ll need to go to it… and a good local spot for that is Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive), an ancient landscape where you can look out for birds and lizards or climb the viewing tower for long-ranging views. For more exotic sightings, head to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park (15 minutes) to see lions, monkeys and penguins (and a collection of dinosaurs too…) You’ll spot Stirling Castle (20 minutes) long before you arrive – it’s up at the top of a volcanic hill and it’s a fine place to visit, to hear the history of Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallace and Bonnie Prince Charlie and visit a collection of well-preserved buildings. Doune Castle (15 minutes) isn’t in quite such a good state, but it’s still worth a visit for an atmospheric stroll. More intrepid walks are all around in Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park (25 minutes), along with watersports, fishing, climbing and loch cruises.
