  • Luxury shepherd’s hut and garden on a private estate in the Trossachs
  • A 20-minute drive to Blair Drummond Safari Park, and 25 to Stirling
  • Firepit, pizza oven and hot tub, plus a welcome hamper and woodburner
Glorious views over the Trossachs and a spectacular setting on the family-run Cardross Estate of more than four thousand acres of fields and woodland. What could be better? The Poachers Hut sits in its own private field, kitted out with its own exclusive-use firepit, pizza oven and hot tub (towels and flip-flops are on hand). The lovingly designed shepherd’s hut is a luxury haven with everything to make a stay cosy and relaxing: bespoke oak floors, a comfy double bed, en-suite shower and an eating area. The well-equipped kitchenette has a Nespresso coffee machine for the morning caffeine kick, a microwave and fridge. A generous welcome hamper comes as part of the package, including fresh eggs from the resident hens and home-made produce. On cooler days the woodburner (wood and kindling supplied) will keep you toasty, and should it rain (this is Scotland, remember), Netflix, Alexa and wifi will do their best to ensure you’re entertained. When the sun is on duty, relish the chance to move outside onto the south-facing patio, fire up the barbecue or cook up a pizza. If you’re not keen on self-catering, there are loads of dining options within 25 minutes’ drive. Thanks to the lack of light or noise pollution hereabouts, you have the chance to spot shy wildlife flitting around during the day – look out for deer, hares, pheasants and red kites – and big starry skies on clear nights.

Local attractions

The Poachers Hut is in a cracking location for exploring Central Scotland. The Lake of Menteith (five minutes’ drive, Scotland’s only ‘loch’ called a ‘lake’) offers up fly fishing and waterside hikes, while you can rent bikes at Aberfoyle (15 minutes) to get out exploring the trails of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park (20 minutes). Get a taster of the park’s gorgeous forest and lake scenery by following the Three Lochs Forest Drive, or jump on a steamer at Loch Katrine Visitor Centre (half an hour) to tour the water. At Blair Drummond Safari Park (20 minutes) you can spend the day in the company of rhinos, lions and elephants, cruise the boating lake or watch birds of prey flying shows. Historic Stirling (25 minutes) is home to an austere castle on its rocky crag, open for tours of its kitchens and chapel as well as regular summer events and theatre performances. At the fabled landmark Wallace Monument (half an hour), clamber up 246 steps to reach The Royal Chamber, with immersive displays on the Battle of Stirling Bridge of 1297, and panoramas from the viewing deck.
