  • Peaceful Perthshire site within the grounds of Scone Palace
  • A 15-minute drive to Perth; Tay Forest Park 25 minutes
  • Member price shown; non-members select £7.50/night extra
You’ve probably heard of Scone Palace already – this ancient building was the place where Scottish kings were crowned for centuries, and it’s now a popular Perthshire tourist attraction. And now here’s a chance to get to know the place in a different way – Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site is set within the grounds of the royal palace, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of all those former kings. There’s no direct access to the palace itself from the campsite, but it’s only about a 15-minute walk to the main site, with its café, kitchen garden and playground as well as the iconic building. The site is managed by the Camping and Caravanning Club but it’s open to all customers, with discounted rates available for members (you’ll just need to make sure you select the correct membership option on your booking). Spacious pitches here are set up on a peaceful and pretty tree-lined site that’s also home to plentiful wildlife (keep your eyes open for deer, ospreys and black rabbits while you’re here). Kids and dogs are welcome (with a play area for the former and a dog walk area for the latter) and barbecues are also permitted for a bit of outdoor cookery. Everyday essentials are covered too, including a motorhome service point, a launderette, wifi and modern bathrooms with a family shower room and accessible facilities. The site shop covers lots of the basics, and there are more options for shopping and eating out in Scone village (five minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Friendly staff, super clean facilities & spacious spots get top marks. It's a peaceful spot, great for cycling and exploring. Just note WiFi can be patchy & bring an extension lead for your pitch hook-up – it’s a bit pricey too.

Powered grass caravan, tent or trailer tent site (jumbo)

Liked Very friendly welcome and shown to pitch. The staff asked if we were having a nice time and checked everything was OK.

Plenty of space between tent pitches

Grass pitches were flat and the ground took the pegs easily.

Clean facilities. Showers were warm and the changing facilities spacious.

The site itself was very well kept. One small park for younger kids.

Plenty of vans, motorhomes and tents but no noise in the evenings. Slept well.

Well located for access to A9. Right next to Perth Racecourse.

Restaurant next door, although we didn’t visit. Discount available at the reception.

Disliked WiFi dropped in and out. Not horrendous and it really shouldn’t ruin a stay and might have been location of pitch to mast. I almost wasn’t going to mention it but we paid strong money for the visit so feel entitled to expect it to work without issues.

About 25m to the hookup from the pitch. Our cable wouldn’t stretch but fortunately had an extension with me so we made it work. I located the hookup-plug under my wheel arch to protect from the elements. Bring a cable with 25m on it or an extension as they have no spares to borrow.

No ball games. Appreciate the reasons. Shame when you have young kids.

Not a reflection on the site at all but the crows will have your rubbish bags if you leave unattended for any length of time. We mistakenly left a bag we had intended to dispose of and came back to carnage. Our fault. Embarrassing considering the site is so well kept and some effort made to clear it all up. The wheelie bins are not located on the main park itself but rather at the entry/exit to the site. At least we didn’t find any within the main boundary of the pitches.

Pricing was punchy. £225 for 3 nights with hookup and jumbo pitch. This included a per night £7.50 supplement as non members of the caravan and camping club. Don't think I’ve ever paid more.

Local attractions

You’ll have to start by visiting the palace, of course – there’s plenty to fill a whole day here as you roam the gardens, find out about the Stone of Destiny and explore the gorgeous interiors. Look out for special events too, including Highland cow experiences, circus skills sessions, horse trials and the famed annual Game Fair in early July. It’s not the only grand historic building around here, either – you may also like to visit places like Falkland Palace & Garden (35 minutes’ drive) and Castle Campbell (45 minutes) for more impressive heritage. There’s also the Black Watch Castle and Museum in Perth (15 minutes) – and while you’re in the city you can visit the art gallery and theatre or take a walk alongside the River Tay. If you’d like to see some more of the scenery, perhaps take your bikes to the trails of Kinnoull Hill (15 minutes), go for a wander in Tay Forest Park (25 minutes) or take the family to Active Kids Adventure Park (10 minutes) for both outdoor and indoor activities.
