  • Back-to-basics camping on a family-run smallholding in East Lothian
  • A 15-minute drive to North Berwick; access Edinburgh by train
  • Pop-up grass pitches close to hill walks and the beach
No-frills but fabulous views – Wamphray Croft is a pop-up campsite in gorgeous East Lothian countryside, set on a well-groomed, flat and easily accessible field. Views from the camping field stretch to Gullane, the Fife coastline and the landmark North Berwick Law – it’s just a 10-minute hop by car to several local attractions. The site is surrounded on all sides by farmland and well away from the road, with a large grass play area separate from the pitches so kids can enjoy ball games or fly kites in complete safety. Dogs are welcome on site too, and if you’d rather explore on two feet with your pet, the site has direct access to an off-road path (a dog-friendly four-mile round trip) to Athelstaneford village, the birthplace of Scotland's Saltire flag. Travelling by public transport? The helpful site owners can pick you up (by prior arrangement), or you can walk to the site from Drem railway station in 15 minutes. Otherwise, there’s ample space at each pitch for you to park one vehicle. Please note that there is no electricity available at this off-grid site, but facilities do include portable toilets, a basic portable shower and drinking water.

What customers say

This chill, family-run campsite gets a thumbs up for its legend hosts, Donna & Andrew, and the cute donkeys & ponies. Spacious, clean sites, solid basic loos & showers. Perfect spot for coastal exploring or a quick train trip to Edinburgh. Most loved the no-frills vibe, though a few found the facilities a bit basic, with small loo cubicles and no shower drying space.

Liked Stayed here with my two sons for one night. It’s an excellent little camp site, my boys really enjoyed the donkeys and the lady who runs the site was very friendly and let the boys feed the donkeys their breakfast which they said was was the highlight of our trip! Facilities are basic but very clean. We didn’t use shower but chemical toilets were clean and there were enough for the size of the site (no queues). Bins, sink, drinking water and a shelter for eating were also available. Site is pretty level, easy to get pegs into the ground. Owners gave good tips on where to eat locally and we had top notch fish and chips on Gullane beach. Would definitely stay here again.

Liked My daughter and I stayed for 2 nights camping. Donna was really welcoming and helpful when we arrived. The site was immaculate and the pitch was a great size. Big enough for a large tent and a second car when my wife joined us for the second night. The campsite is in a nice spot with great views of the sunset each night. My daughter loved the donkeys and ponies. I would highly recommend this quiet peaceful site. We’ll be back!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Warm welcome from Donna, space between other campers, clean loos, friendly donkeys on site.

Disliked Nothing, if we were staying longer or if the campsite was busier there aren’t many toilets but this wasn’t an issue - we really enjoyed our stay.

Liked Donna and Andrew were very welcoming - when we said we would be arriving later than anticipated, they told us not to worry just to keep them updated.

The donkeys were cute and took an interest in our dog, they kept racing him as he went past their enclosure.

When I had an accident in my car, they let me wait there until a recovery truck came to get us for our journey home. Could not have been more helpful and hospitable.

Local attractions

Golf mad? Play a round of golf on the hallowed greens of Muirfield, the links at Gullane Golf Club (both 10 minutes’ drive) or North Berwick (15 minutes). Otherwise grab the hiking boots and set out for Chesters Hill (five minutes); it’s an easy stroll and rewards with the remains of a prehistoric fort. Scramble up the landmark cone-shaped North Berwick Law for views over East Lothian and the Firth of Forth. If the kids (and any dogs) are pining for the beach, Aberlady Bay and Yellowcraig beach (both 10 minutes) are both canine-friendly and backed by dunes for a run around. Families can go wild on go-karts at East Links Family Park (20 minutes), or head to the Scottish Seabird Centre (15 minutes) to take boat trips out to Bass Rock. In need of a rainy day idea? Have a look at the vintage cars at Myreton Motor Museum, or book ahead to admire the sleek shape of Concorde at the National Museum of Flight Scotland (both five minutes). And how about this as handy, well-priced accommodation for the Edinburgh Festival or Fringe? It’s half an hour’s train journey into Edinburgh Waverley station from Drem (15 minutes’ walk).
