  • Countryside park with a pretty pond, Bronze Age monument and dog walks
  • Nairn town and beach within 10 minutes’ drive, and Inverness in 25
  • On-site shop selling local products and gas; fishing; barbecue area
If hotfooting it over to the Highlands is a travel plan of yours in the near future, there’s a splendid space for you at Barrow Campsite on the banks of the river Nairn. This park is also a 10-minute drive from Nairn’s town and beach, in a secluded landscape with hillside views; come in spring to see swathes of the peaceful area carpeted in bluebells. Warmer weather’s your best chance of firing up the barbecue too – a dedicated area is on site if you’re keen on cooking over coals. There's a shop on site which stocks all of the essentials, such as local meats and eggs, confectionary, ice creams, charcoal, fire wood and alcohol. A supermarket is also about a 10-minute drive away. Waterside walks with the pooch appeal? Potter around the pond at this dog-friendly park or roam beside the river; you could also fish from the water (just make sure to pick up a permit at a local shop in Nairn first). Once you’ve had enough of angling, trot back in time by exploring the Bronze Age barrow on site, the Hangman's Cairn. Arriving at the park by bike? There's a handy bike rack beside the common room and owner Ewan’s on hand to give top tips on biking routes around the area.

What customers say

Top-notch clean site, spacious spots. Awesome modern facilities, especially the loos. Chill vibe, lovely country setting near Nairn/Inverness. Friendly staff. Great dog-walking spots (secure field, pond!) and Highland cows are a hit. Highly recommend for a cruisy break.

Rooftop tent unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked We like the facilities at this campground and also the pleasant location. We usually visit once a year.

Disliked We left the campground this morning after a couple had moved in next to us the day before with two dogs, one of which was a pitbull or some crossbreed. Not only did we feel uncomfortable around this dog, but the owner also walked the dog at 3.30 am. ! When returning, the couple started talking and feeding the dogs. They did not respect the quiet hours and left by car around 6 am. Their tent was left on site.
Very unpleasant experience this time. If people with such dogs and behaving like that cannot be kept away from the site, we're not coming back.

Liked Warm welcome; extremely clean facilities with lovely hot showers.
Close to good walks, and easy 10-mins drive to Nairn centre where there are plenty of places to eat. We can recommend ‘The Classroom’ restaurant. Excellent food and service.

Rooftop tent unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked A really lovely campsite that did not disappoint. The grounds are well kept and looked after, with very clean bathroom facilities plus a cabin for washing dishes and washing machines. There is also the nice touch of a bothy which has a metal outside cooking area and plenty of tables and chairs inside which offers a warm eating/relaxing area out of the weather, that was much appreciated. This is a great dog friendly site offering plenty of beautiful walks alongside fields of crops and the river. There is a large climbing frame for the kids which was in very good condition. The Wi-Fi on site is excellent even over at the tents, enough to stream movies. The site is surrounded by fields, with sheep, goats and lama's? It is very much right in the Scottish countryside! Despite this it is only a few miles from plenty of shops or about 15mins drive from Inverness shopping park near Culloden. Overall the campsite is really well kept and a credit to the owner. I will be returning hopefully soon, Thanks.

Disliked I could not fault this site and others should use it as an example.

Rooftop tent unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked Clean facilities, smart campsite, washing facilities available. Dog walking area, secure and separated. Beautiful view. Helpful staff.

Disliked Check-in process not clear or easy to understand about what to do when you arrive, and when it will be staffed. Email said 9-10am and 3-4pm, sign on the gate said until 7pm so we followed the wrong instructions. Information about arrival not sent until after we had arrived, so had no confirmation of booking or instructions/directions from hosts since booking to after arrival.

Local attractions

Historical hotspots are rife in this part of Scotland – hike to Cawdor Castle and Gardens in an hour and a half, then travel to Culloden Battlefield visitor centre and interactive exhibition (15 minutes' drive) to see the setting of the famed Jacobite Rising’s last battle. The 18th-century Fort George is about the same distance for gazing at an awe-inspiring selection of arms, including muskets, pikes and ammunition pouches. More places to poke around in the past – from museums to castles – are in Inverness (25 minutes), which is also the gateway to Loch Ness (45 minutes). Drive or dawdle along the banks while trying to catch a glimpse of the fabled monster, stopping by the ruins of Castle Urquhart (55 minutes) for pretty pics with the water in the background. To get out on the water, dolphin spotting and sea fishing tours leave from Inverness and sail through the Moray Firth, while the northern edges of the Cairngorms National Park are around 40 minutes away for terrific treks in this classic Scottish landscape. Head deeper into the area for the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (an hour away), then round off the trip with a tour and tasting of some of Scotland’s finest whisky at the Knockando distillery (55 minutes).
