  • Quiet site by the sea in a famed spot for dolphin watching
  • Friendly atmosphere, ideal for families
  • Barbecuing allowed on the local beach
Can you think of anything more sublime than spotting dolphins from a spectacular stretch of Scottish sand, then barbecuing supper on that same stretch of sand that evening...? This is what awaits at Fortrose Bay Campsite, a small site on the shores of the Moray Firth by the Rosemarkie and Fortrose golf course and stretching to the famed Chanonry point. The UK's most northern pod of dolphins is frequently sighted here (the Scottish Dolphin Centre is just along the Firth at Spey Bay). This is a picnicy place too, with the sandy beach leading to rockpools and caves (via cafés for supplies) and is a first-rate stop for scenery and wildlife. The site is a paltry five-minute walk from its nearest village Fortrose, an old village with 19th-century harbour and 13th-century ruined cathedral. A good number of good restaurants, cafés, pubs and gift shops are in the area.

Local attractions

What an utterly attractive area this is... The Moray Firth is a Special Conservation Area, famed for its wildlife and noted as one of the most esteemed places on the British coast for spotting dolphins and whales. Chanonry Point is one of the best known viewing places for dolphins, but many visitors also take a dolphin spotting boat trip out on the water to see more. Once dolphins, whales and other wildlife have been hailed many times, turn your attention to the activities and outdoorsy stuff around Fortrose Holiday Park like walking, cycling, horse riding, sailing and canoeing, archery, golf, tennis, badminton… or you could try some laser games or paintballing, or take a local keep-fit class…? Or tackle one of the many other hobbies-based pastimes happily pursued around here, such as photography, astronomy or delving into Scottish history… Play parks are near the site with football pitches and volleyball courts. At Inverness, about six miles away, visitors can book tours to attractions around the rest of the Highlands.
